Two SLMC members who defected from the party during the time of its late leader M.H.M. Ashraff, and are currently holding deputy minister posts, are planning to make a comeback to the opposition.
These two deputy ministers have held negotiations with the SLMC leadership for over a month now on their plan to cross over in the run up to the Presidential election. Party sources said that a senior Muslim politician representing the Democratic Unity Alliance is mediating in this case.
“They are expected to take a political decision even targeting the next parliamentary election as well. We have asked them to support Opposition Common Candidate Gen. Sarath Fonseka first,” SLMC sources said.
In addition, another SLMC member who joined the Government in 2007 is also said to be seeking to rejoin the party during this election period.
