FORCASTING THE SL MUSIC INDUSTRY AND CHANGES: Now and DUE!
I'm probably the newest member of our community and I'm pretty excited to share something I've been thinking lately I just returned from Aussie after my studies in drama and theatrical arts. I left the country four years back and I'm back and working for the Nielsons. Things have changed a lot and some positive and some negative. So I've noticed LOADS of changes have gone through our music industry and I'm fascinated with the diversity and I have the priviledge of meeting and talking few of the key musicians WHO IS POPULAR and Working on many great stuff for now and future.
Quite surprisingly, I didn't find any accurate reading of these people like BnS, Iraj and Kasun Kalhara- who are they and why are they doing what they do.
I think we are on the verge of the Beggining of the 3rd Generation of Sri Lankan Modern music trend and can expect miracles from upcoming musicians. Hence I decided to write you some of my thoughts on this.
Some of you may not agrre with me. But i think its fair to give people what they deserve for the things they done.

1st Generation/Revolution - YEAR 1999 - 2004 - BnS ERA
I consider the beginning started with BnS in year 1999. the Modern trend. This is the 1st Generation of SL Modern Music Industry. Thats BnS. there were artists like Ranidu, Ashanti who followed them to the Industry.
2nd Generation - YEAR 2004-2008 - Iraj ERA
The 2nd Generation started undoubtly Iraj and Illnoise and the HipHop penetration to the market. Iraj was Followed by Centigradz, Charles Mark and THIS IS THE PERIOD ALL THESE NEW BAND STARTED TO POP - with and MOSTLY WITHOUT ANY SOLID MUSICAL BACKGROUND.- Just for fame. TV Time and got nothing better to do.
All these bands like Chinthy, inner sense, sideeffects, randir, Bk, krishan, infaas, Dtap, DeepBluz woooh!!! heheee... what Not!!! all these funny name bands and wannabe rappers were just FOLLOWERS of Iraj. Iraj had problems people leaving him and we can clearly see that he's production standaards have gone low and low and just trying to survive nowadyas now.
It's also important see that the growth was immense and prgrams and products if these programs such as Sirasa superstarts came into the scene and people/ poster boys like Shihan and Malith started to emmerge. Only guy from that buncth remaining would be shihan.
BRIDGING GAP - Funny music and None serious Musicians (Aathal Musicians)
Daddy was the next band to hit. they followed the GYPSIES Strategy and went to become and have become the new Gypsies. then came chillie- who is basically just a face who cannot sing that much and has only two hits so far. AGAIN this is where you see, that a new change is needed and the 2 nd ERA as you see is REACHING ITS PEAK POINT. Some New HITS and New Production STYLES are Needed.
Even Iraj nowadays belong to this catogorie making songs like Koththu???. funny. But can it be the most lovebale song of your life for these days? just I think he shows that he's not the same and he's selling out. sad.
Before the MUCH HOPEFUL 3rd GENARATION
I see these war's that Elakiri recently had was just a initial sparks. and it's somewhat open to see that some producers are desperately using samples and what you call musical loops to create melodies. this from a proffesional point of view is just LACK OF CREATIVITY AND CONCEPTS and will be a serious issue and a matter of debate when everybody's starts to blame at someone for STEALING A LOOP or a MELODY.
Who will be the Stars of the 3rd Generation?
