Police said today that 24-hour police protection has been provided to the residence of Hirunika Premachandra, the daughter of slain former MP and Presidential Adviser Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra.
Hirunika Premachandra had lodged a complaint at the Police Headquarters on April 23, citing a news article which had appeared in a weekend newspaper which claimed that there is a threat to her life. The complaint states that when Hirunika had inquired from the Editor of the newspaper and the journalist regarding the report they had informed her that a conversation had taken place at a certain location implying that she would be harmed.
As instructed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), a team led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) has commenced investigations into the complaint, police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said.
On April 28 a statement was recorded from Miss. Premachandra, who had stated that she did not know any further details other than the information provided in her complaint to the police HQ.
A statement has also been recorded from the individuals who had informed Hirunika of the article published in the newspaper.
Meanwhile police has recorded a statement today (30) from the Editor and journalists of the newspaper which had published the article in question, while they had stated that they would provide a statement tomorrow after consulting their lawyer.
24-hour protection has been provided to Hirunika Premachandra’s residence, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Colombo Cinnamon Garden Police, while investigations are still continuing, police said adding that arrests will be made according to investigations.
Therefore negative statement made by media as well as Hirunika Premachandra, regarding investigations on the complaint and protection afforded to her, are completely baseless, the police spokesman said in a release.
