A Song Of Ice & Fire

    a_song_of_ice_and_fire_by_ertacaltinoz-d9fzd8e.jpg

Obviously this is not a new topic for most of the people in here. :D
I'm sure most of you guys have heard or have watched and are fans of the much renowned TV series, "The Game Of Thrones" by HBO.
But as you all know the TV series is based on the fabulous, Epic Fantasy novel series written by George R.R. Martin.

Some people love the books, some people love the TV show and some people love both the TV show and the books.
I myself am a lover of the fantasy novel series but not so much of the TV series :D

This is not because I hate the TV show for the acting, the story or the plot, it's because for the simple fact that most of the stuff that can be described in the books, and most of the things that we see & feel by reading the books, cannot be described or make us see or feel by the TV show.
And this is only MY OPINION & what I felt by reading the books & then trying to watch the tv series.

And I'd like to dedicate this thread to all of you Song of Ice & Fire AND The Game Of Thrones lovers who has much to discuss and have questions about the vast & epic world of Westeros & Essos and also the History & lore regarding "A song Of Ice and Fire"

It's been a long time since I've read the last book "A Dance with Dragons"(2014 as I remember) so my memory is a bit cloudy and the facts may not be 100% true but I'll try to provide much more content as accurate as I can. And of course there are so many got fnatics who know about the lore & fan theories very well, so post your opinions too.. :)

And of course you can gather much more details and facts by visiting a Wiki or going through The sub forum of "A Song Of Ice and Fire" @ reddit. (BUT YOU WILL BE WIDE OPEN TO HUGE SPOILERS)

Throughout this thread I'll try to post about the history of westeros (beginning from the children of the forest, the first men, the andals), the present about the seven kingdoms (The main seven houses, their bannermen and the rest), wonderful creations and places in this epic fantasy (The wall and such :D) and the story, plot & the lore... :)

And of course if others can post & discuss about these & other things surrounding "A song Of Ice & Fire", I'll be much obliged.

A song of Ice & fire is a seven-part book series and still only five books have been published :D The sixth one is to be published this year and since it took some time (The last book "A Dance with Dragons" was released on 2011), the tv show has taken over the novel series and now heading in some sort of a different direction. The ending of both the book series & the TV series maybe be similar but at the moment the TV show has taken some character stories in different paths.

The Best Thing I love about A song Of Ice & Fire is, the story is told by main characters' POINT OF VIEW Format. :)

For an example the starting chapter after the prologue of "A game of thrones", the chapter is simply named as "Bran". And in this chapter we are actually Bran. :D We are looking from his eyes. And we are thinking from his mind. We see what he sees and we feel what he feels and we get to know his likes and dislikes and what his opinions are..
And in the next chapter we go to Ned. :) It's a really beautiful & fantastic way Martin has used to tell the story. So when we despise some actions and decisions of a person through one characters mind, we may like & agree with the same decisions through another characters mind.

Another thing that is unique in ever type of book is a book can describe what a person keeps to himself. His thoughts, his ideas, his opinions that he does't reveal to others. This is a huge advantage that the books have over other things like tv shows or movies.

And also the history is described much more vastly and beautifully in the books. There is so much back story to places, events & characters in the books.
One thing I remember is, how Aegon I Targaryen(Aegon the Conqueror) came to westeros from dragonstone and with the help of his sister-wives, visenya & Rhaneys and how the 3 of them rode the dragons Vhargar, Meraxes & Balerion the Black Dread in "The Filed Of Fire" & fought and decimated the armies of Loren Lannister, The king of the Rock & Mern Gardener, The king Of The Reach.
When you imagine that kind of thing, it's something of a marvel.

Of course the most powerful & strongest thing is your mind. :) When Martin describes some thing in the books and when you imagine it.... you will go beyond borders that'll limit other entertainment methods such as videos.
That's what I love about books.

    A Game Of Thrones

    6421982.jpg

A Game of Thrones is the first novel in A Song of Ice and Fire. It was first published on August 6, 1996.
The TV show is titled Game of Thrones and takes its name from the first novel, A Game of Thrones. From the exchange of Queen Cersei Lannister, to Eddard Stark "When you play the game of thrones, either you win or you die. There is no middle ground." and Jorah Mormont, to Daenerys Targaryen "The common people pray for rain, healthy children, and a summer that never ends. It is no matter to them if the high lords play their game of thrones, so long as they are left in peace. They never are."

The tale of A Game of Thrones is told through the eyes of 8 POV characters and a one-off prologue POV.

Prologue: Will, a man of the Night's Watch.
15 chapters: Eddard Stark, Warden of the North and Lord of Winterfell.
11 chapters: Catelyn Stark, of House Tully, wife of Eddard Stark.
6 chapters: Sansa Stark, eldest daughter of Eddard and Catelyn Stark.
5 chapters: Arya Stark, youngest daughter of Eddard and Catelyn Stark.
7 chapters: Bran Stark, middle of three sons of Eddard and Catelyn Stark.
9 chapters: Jon Snow, bastard son of Eddard Stark.
9 chapters: Tyrion Lannister, a dwarf, son of Tywin Lannister.
10 chapters: Daenerys Targaryen, youngest child of the Mad King.

    Plot Intoduction

A Game of Thrones is set in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, a land reminiscent of medieval Europe. In Westeros the seasons last for years, sometimes decades, at a time.

Fifteen years prior to the novel, the Seven Kingdoms were torn apart by a civil war, known alternately as 'Robert's Rebellion' and the 'War of the Usurper'. Prince Rhaegar Targaryen kidnapped Lyanna Stark, arousing the ire of her family and of her betrothed, Lord Robert Baratheon. The Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen, had Lyanna's father and eldest brother executed when they demanded her safe return. Her second brother, Eddard, joined his boyhood friend Robert Baratheon and Jon Arryn, with whom they had been fostered as children, in declaring war against the Targaryens, securing the allegiances of House Tully and House Arryn through a network of dynastic marriages (Lord Eddard to Catelyn Tully and Lord Jon Arryn to Lysa Tully). The powerful House Tyrell continued to support the King, but House Lannister and House Martell both dragged their feet due to insults against their houses by the King. The civil war climaxed with the Battle of the Trident, when Prince Rhaegar was killed by Robert Baratheon. The Lannisters finally agreed to support King Aerys, but then brutally turned against him, sacking the capital at King's Landing. Jaime Lannister of the Kingsguard executed King Aerys and House Lannister swore loyalty to Robert Baratheon. The Tyrells and remaining royalists surrendered and Robert Baratheon was declared King of the Seven Kingdoms. Unfortunately, during the war, Lyanna Stark had died, apparently of illness; Robert Baratheon instead married Cersei Lannister to cement the alliance. Despite Robert's victory, the Mad King's youngest son Viserys and youngest daughter Daenerys were taken to safety across the sea by loyal retainers. After the war House Martell chose a path of isolation, since Prince Doran's sister Elia (Prince Rhaegar's wife) and her young children had been killed by Lannister armsmen during the storming of the capital.

Six years later King Robert proved his resolve by defeating a rebellion by Lord Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands. Balon's two eldest sons were killed and his youngest son, Theon, was given to the care of Eddard Stark as a ward.

I'll try to describe some of the background & history to the houses & their bannermen later on. :) Wouldn't want to describe the entire story because of spoilers & this becoming much more boring

    A Clash Of The Kings

    gameofthrones2.jpg

A Clash of Kings is the second novel in A Song of Ice and Fire, an epic fantasy series by American author George R. R. Martin expected to consist of seven volumes. It was first published on 16 November 1998 in the United Kingdom, although the first United States edition did not follow until March 1999.

    A Storm Of Swords

    9780007426232.jpg

A Storm of Swords is the third of seven planned novels in A Song of Ice and Fire, a fantasy series by American author George R. R. Martin. It was first published on 8 August 2000 in the United Kingdom, with a United States edition following in November 2000.

At the time of its publication, A Storm of Swords was the longest novel in the series. It was so long that in the UK, Australia and Israel its paperback edition was split in half, Part 1 being published as Steel and Snow in June 2001 (with the one-volume cover) and Part 2 as Blood and Gold in August 2001 (with a specially-commissioned new cover). The same division was used in the Polish and Greek editions. In France, the decision was made to cut the novel into four separate volumes.

    A Feast For Crows

    feast_for_crows.jpg

The novel was first published on 17 October 2005 in the United Kingdom, with a United States edition following on 8 November 2005.

In May 2005, Martin announced that the "sheer size" of his still-unfinished manuscript for A Feast for Crows had led him and his publishers to split the narrative into two books. Rather than divide the text in half chronologically, Martin opted to instead split the material by character and location, resulting in "two novels taking place simultaneously" with different casts of characters.[3] A Feast for Crows was published months later, and the concurrent novel A Dance with Dragons was released on July 12, 2011. Martin also noted that the A Song of Ice and Fire series would now likely total seven novels.

    A Dance With Dragons

    DNCWTHDRGN2008.jpg

A Dance with Dragons is the fifth of seven planned novels in the epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire by American author George R. R. Martin. In some areas the paperback edition was published in two parts titled Dreams and Dust and After the Feast. It is the first novel in the series to be published following the commencement of the HBO series adaptation, Game of Thrones.

A Dance with Dragons was originally intended to be the title of the second novel in the sequence, when Martin still envisioned the series as a trilogy. Some early US editions of A Game of Thrones (1996) list A Dance of Dragons as the forthcoming second volume in the series. The 1998 anthology Legends, which features the novella The Hedge Knight from the same universe, lists A Dance of Dragons as the third installment of a four-book series. Like the previous four volumes in the Ice and Fire series, the book includes a lengthy appendix, with the volume running a total of 1,040 pages.

    Winds Of Winter

    330858_800.jpg

The Winds of Winter is the forthcoming sixth novel in the epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin.

The previous installment, A Dance with Dragons, covered less story than Martin intended, excluding at least one planned large battle sequence and leaving several character threads ending in cliffhangers.Martin intends to resolve these storylines "very early" in The Winds of Winter, saying "I'm going to open with the two big battles that I was building up to, the battle in the ice and the battle at Meereen—the battle of Slaver's Bay. And then take it from there."

A Victarion Greyjoy chapter will begin five minutes after the end of A Dance with Dragons, taking place on the eve of the Iron Islanders' surprise attack on the cities in Slaver's Bay. An Arianne Martell sample chapter that Martin released on his website showed her heading for Griffin's Roost to see the young man who is calling himself Aegon.

Martin said in March 2012 that the final two novels will take readers farther north than any of the previous books, and that the Others will appear in the book.

Been waiting for this book for so long :frown: And it'll take some time for the paperback to come to Sri Lanka when it gets released. :sorry:

    A Dream Of Spring

    A-Dream-OF-Spring-PDF.jpg

The last book of the series.
Martin is firm about ending the series with the seventh novel "until I decide not to be firm". With his stated goal to tell the story from beginning to end, he will not truncate the story to fit into an arbitrary number of volumes. He knows the ending in broad strokes as well as the future of the main characters, and will finish the series with bittersweet elements where not everyone will live happily ever after. Martin hopes to write an ending similar to The Lord of the Rings that he felt gave the story a satisfying depth and resonance. On the other hand, Martin noted the challenge to avoid a situation like the finale of the TV series Lost, which left some fans disappointed by deviating too far from their own theories and desires. In early 2016, Martin said he did not believe A Dream of Spring would be published before the last season of the HBO show.

Of course a lot of you guys know the main story surrounding the Starks, Targaryens & Lannisters by watching the game of thrones. But there's much more detail into in other than what is shown in the TV show and of course the history & the back stories 7 plots.I'll try to make those things my main focus here. And I'll try to describe the main & sub characters to somewhat depth and also the houses and a history to them.
But of course nothing will make sense and make you interested other than reading the books yourself. :) So I'd say, try them. I bought all the paperbacks of the 5 books released until now because I love to read them that way.

If you are looking for the paperbacks, (Not certain if there are any hardcovers in Sri Lanka) you can find them on Gunasena & Sarasavi bookshops. And also Makeen & Jeya Bookshops at Kolpity.
A book was priced around rs.1400 during 2012/2013 period don't know how much they cost at the moment.
Most Of The later books (Storm Of Swords & Dance with Dragons mainly) are usually divided into two parts and both parts costs the same as the other books :frown: But THERE MAYBE SOME COPIES OF THEM PUBLISHED WITHIN A SINGLE BOOK IN THE OUTLETS OF MAKEEN OR JEYA. I found one for the DAnce With Dragons at Makeen. :)

And of course if you are unable to buy the books or like it reading through a monitor, you can always try the Ebooks. :) I'll post the links

The Land Beyond The Wall & Iron Islands

    mur.gif
    affc-original-iron-islands-map.jpg

The wall and the land beyond the wall where the wildlings live. And also children of the forest who are extincted & other creatures in the myths. Giants, wargs, direwolves, others & whitewalkers.

And also the Iron islands which is the seat of power of the house of Greyjoy.
The Greyjoys of Pyke claim descent from the Grey King of the Age of Heroes. Legend says the Grey King ruled not only the western isles but the sea itself, and took a mermaid to wife.

Historical Timeline of Westeros until the Andal Invasion

    Dawn Age

    Prehistorical Period

The lands of Westeros are inhabited by a mysterious race of diminutive humanoid creatures known as the children of the forest, as well as giants and other magical creatures.

Who are the Children of The Forest??

    350px-Children_of_the_forest_by_kallielef.jpg

The children of the forest, sometimes referred to simply as the "children" are a mysterious non-human race that originally inhabited the continent of Westeros long before the arrival of the First Men during the Dawn Age more than 12,000 years ago.

When we arrive to the the "A Dance with Dragons" we learn a lot about them. And they play a major role into the development of a certain character and will play a huge role in the upcoming books & episodes in my opinion.

The invasion of the First Men

A group of humans from Essos, the First Men, invades Westeros by crossing the Arm of Dorne, bearing weapons of bronze. The Children try to defend using their obsidian weapons and magic but helpless because the first men are stronger and much larger in numbers. They overtake lands and builds kingdoms.

Among the children, there were greenseers. They had the ability to see through the faces which were carved into the weirwoods. So the first men chopped down the weirwoods. That's why you can't find many weirwoods in westeros except in the northern castles.

Moat Cailin was raised roughly ten thousand years ago by the First Men. According to myth, the children attempted to use Moat Cailin to hold back the flood of invading First Men by calling upon their nameless gods from Moat Cailin's Children's Tower to send down the "hammer of the waters" to break the lands of Westeros in two by shattering the Neck and separating the north from the south, in the same manner they shattered the Arm of Dorne centuries earlier. However, the children failed in the attempt and only succeeded in flooding the Neck, creating bogs and swamps.

The wars went in the First Men's favor until the two sides reached a peace agreement, called the Pact, on the Isle of Faces. The First Men gave dominion of the deep woods to the children and promised not to put any weirwood trees to the axe anywhere in the realm. In return, they received claim to the rest of the Westeros.

In the later battles which are to come, Moat Calin has become a valuable place strategically. With a less number of people guarding correctly it could be defended against hordes of armies which are coming from the south

    Signing of the Pact

After years of warfare, the First Men and children of the forest come to a standstill and finally agree to a peaceful coexistence, signing the Pact on the Isle of Faces. This pact gives the First Men dominion over the open lands and lets the children keep control over the forested areas. In time, the First Men adopt the worship of the old gods of the forest.

The old gods are still worshipped in the seven kingdoms by the northmen, crannogmen and the people beyond the wall. In the story we get a kind of special affection towards the old gods since the starks worship them.

    Age Of Heroes

An era during the history of Westeros, which would be named so later for the great men and women who live in the years of peace and prosperity following the forging of the Pact. The Pact endures for nearly four thousand years, and in that time, the children of the forest and the First Men grow closer. In time, the First Men set aside many of their cultural differences to embrace the ways and customs of the children of the forest. With the exception of the Drowned God of the Iron Islands and the Lady of the Waves and Lord of the Skies of the Three Sisters, the gods of the children become those of the First Men.
Many of the noble houses of Westeros today trace their lineage back to the Age of Heroes. This was the time when grand historical figures are said to have lived, such as Brandon the Builder, founder of House Stark; Lann the Clever, founder of House Lannister, who winkled Casterly Rock from the Casterlys; or Garth Greenhand, founder of House Gardener of the Reach. Also during this era the Storm Kings arise in the stormlands: a line with figures such as the founding Durran, supposed builder of Storm's End; and the Grey King, first king of the Iron Islands.

    Brandon The Builder

    Brandon_stark_the_builder_by_feliche.jpg

Brandon Stark, also known as Brandon the Builder and Bran the Builder, was the legendary founder of House Stark who is said to have lived during the Age of Heroes. It is said that Brandon Stark built both Winterfell and The Wall with the help of the giants.
Tales from the stormlands claim Brandon helped Durran build Storm's End (Baratheons' Castle) when he was a boy. Some stories claim King Uthor of the High Tower commissioned Bran to design the stone Hightower at Oldtown (Where the citadel is & where masters learn), while others state it was Bran's son, who was also named Brandon

    The Long Night

In this time, night seems to last for a generation, and the longest, coldest and darkest winter descends on Westeros. The ice spreads down from the north, and under the cover of darkness, the Others invade Westeros from the uttermost north, marching, killing and raising up the dead to be their servants in unlife and nearly destroying all men in Westeros. The Long Night comes to an end with the Battle for the Dawn. The children and the First Men unite to defeat the Others with dragonglass weapons, with the Night's Watch pushing them back into the frozen reaches of the Far North.Legendary figures from this time include the last hero and Azor Ahai, who wields a great sword of fire, Lightbringer.

I'm sure a lot of you knows about the tale of azor ahai. I'll try to describe it later on

    Building of the Wall

With the Others defeated, Bran the Builder, with the aid of giants, the First Men, and perhaps the children of the forest, raises the Wall, a monumental fortification of ice and ancient magic, to shelter the realms of men from the menaces of the north. The Sworn Brotherhood of the Night's Watch guards the Wall. It is said that Bran the Builder also built Winterfell, became the first King in the North, and founded House Stark.

I'll try to post much more stuff about the long night, azor ahai & then about the night's king  Did a bit of copy pasting  and of course you can find all these things if you visit a wiki. But I'll post the timeline nevertheless. If you got questions feel free to ask.
If anybody wants to carry the timeline on, be my guest :) I'll try to post some more stuff tomorrow

The Long Night, The Others & The Building Of The Wall

    John_Picacio_the_Others.jpg

After the first men signed the pact with the children of the forest both of them lived in peace and harmony for about 4000 years. More or Less. But then came the Long Night. In this time, night seems to last for a generation, and the longest, coldest and darkest winter descends on Westeros.

To Be Clear this is the Longest Winter that has ever happened in westeros in that time. "The Long Night lasted a generation and laid waste through famine and terror." Not sure if that's the case in the present. I think it is still and the current winter won't surpass it.

Even though the long night did a huge impact on westeros, I believe that the other parts of the world as well.Specially "The realms of men".

"The Rhoynar tell of a darkness that made the Rhoyne of Essos dwindle and disappear, her waters frozen as far south as the joining of the Selhoru, until a hero convinced the many children of Mother Rhoyne, such as the Crab King and the Old Man of the River, to put aside their bickering and join in a secret song that brought back the day"

"Other legends from the Further East, including Yi Ti, state the Blood Betrayal began the Long Night. The Lion of Night was unleashed upon the world after the Maiden-Made-of-Light turned her back on it.

According to a legend from Yi Ti, during the Long Night the sun hid its face for a lifetime, ashamed at something none could discover, and disaster was only averted by the deeds of a woman with a monkey's tail."

    2016-Calendar.jpg

    The Others / Whitewalkers

    aa32810c563ce0b76fc121e794f870c6.jpg

According to Westerosi legends, in the midst of this darkness a race of apparent demons, called the Others, emerged from the uttermost north of Westeros, the polar regions of the Lands of Always Winter. (You can check the lands of always winter from the map. And understand that this part of land is never been discovered properly and no one knows how vast or large this area is)
They wielded razor-thin swords of ice and raised wights to fight the living. The children of the forest and their allies, the First Men, fought valiantly against them, but were driven southwards by their advance.
    Wall.

Who are White Walkers? Where do they come from? Do they come from a different world? Or have they been here for ages since the beginning? What do they want?? There are so many questions that have been unanswered about them. (Do not mitake them with "Wights".) Wights are dead men or creatures raised up by the Others, seemingly when touched by the cold that accompanies them. Anyone who falls against the Others must be burned, or else the dead will rise again as their thralls. Fear of their own dead becoming wights leads the free folk to burn them.
In an email to his comic book artist, George R.R. Martin described the race as "the Sidhe(supernatural being) made of ice"

In the books the first and foremost incident of encountering the others is the prologue of the first book "A game of thrones". It is the same as in the TV series.

During a ranging beyond the Wall, Ser Waymar Royce is slain by Others. He then rises as a wight and kills Will. Gared is able to escape and flee south of the Wall, but he is executed for desertion by Lord Eddard Stark.

Ser Waymar Royce Is the third & youngest son of Yohn Royce (Bronce yohn). Yohn is a skilled knight who wields himself with a special bronze armour passed down his house (Thus called as bronze yohn). He has competed in several tourneys & melees. Bronze Yohn comes to action in the later books when deciding who is going to control the Vale Of Arryn.

The Others were eventually checked when it was discovered that weapons made of dragonglass could kill them. Legends from the North claim that the last hero made contact with the children. The first members of the Night's Watch drove the Others back in the Battle for the Dawn. (I'll get to the Battle Of Dawn and Azor Ahai later on)

    The Building Of The Wall

The Wall was created by Brandon the Builder after the Long Night to defend the realms of man from the wildlings and Others. Approximately 300 miles in length and 700 feet in height, the Wall is protected by the Night's Watch and according to some, ancient spells and sorcery. Supposedly, Brandon the Builder had placed his foundations along the heights wherever possible. Several mentions in the text suggest that the Wall was much smaller at the time, having been built upon by the Night's Watch builders, who quarried huge blocks of ice from frozen lakes in the haunted forest and dragged them south to make the Wall higher, raising it over the centuries to its present size. However, the severely reduced Night's Watch at the present time is limited to maintenance duty. A total of nineteen fortresses have been built along the Wall though only three, The Shadow Tower, Castle Black and Eastwatch-by-the-Sea are occupied at the start of A Song of Ice and Fire.

It is said that Brandon the Builder got the help of the giants to build the wall and it is reinforced by the magic of the children of the forest

The nights watches' numbers have dwindles through the years because the kings and lords in the later years didn't put much interest into garrisoning the wall thinking that there will never be a threat again. In the beginning of the times, becoming a member of the watch was deemed as a worthy task but today it has changed. In the beginning of the song of Ice & Fire story The "Shadow Tower" is commanded by Sir Denys Mallister, The "Eastwatch by the Sea" by Cotter Pyke & "Castle Black" by Lord Commander Joer Mormont (Jorah mormont's father)

One of the most interesting things about the wall is that it is only been built to withstand the attacks from the north. If the wall is been attacked from the south it'll be helpless.

The Wall provides a tremendous tactical advantage to its defenders, enabling a small group to hold off a much larger force. Defenders are generally beyond the range of bow shot or catapult and in turn rely on archery, catapult and dropped objects to deter an assault. In particular, barrels containing rocks frozen in ice are effective in dispersing a mass charge.

Attackers must rely on one of two tactics, a direct assault on one of the few well-defended gates, or scaling the Wall in small groups and attacking a gate from the rear. The gates have been designed with features such as murder holes and limited access that make them difficult to force. In an extreme case, gates can be filled with rock and ice, thus becoming as impervious as any other part of the wall.

Scaling the Wall involves similar difficulties. A team of determined climbers can reach the top, but only if undetected by defenders, who can easily knock them off with dropped objects or archery. The Wall is thought to "defend itself", disgorging sheets of its own ice.

According to legend, the Wall is vulnerable to the Horn of Joramun.
