skype or yahoo massenger is the standard VOIP for internet based jobs, YM has some hazzling problems and skype therefore, is a good alternative, so certain companies use skype and certain YM.
You need to use what the guy you are working for uses, it is already established venture, they are not going to switch on to your VOIP because you use it, you have to stick to the company's rules and regulations even though you gonna be a freelancer.
