yes in india the IDD SMS charges were higher than the local SMS charges from the beginning. so following the Indian model our government also imposed the same strategy here!:D

ah same as me, we are providing ISP service for airtel. That's why could visit there.
I thought "you may from IBM or Huawei"

kaavya, first of all, thanks lots for the info. I searched at Kiribathgoda last night, SRI 05 was only a 2G network.
But sadly, not even Gampaha district is well covered.

And, about the interconnection fee, other networks deny the fact that they did reject interconnections with Airtel. Not sure who says the truth.

Does anyone know how powerful would be their towers ?
Dialog's 3G ( Huawei I believe ) has a coverage of 1.5-5km only, while Mobitel's 3G towers ( Ericsson ) span a range of around 20kms.
Dialog's are on the 2nd phase of their 3G implementations and upgrading though, which *might* exceed the speed of Mobitel.

Btw, kaavya, have you got any emails of Airtel executives ? They tend not to be replying to emails or that at least they still do not have a proper internal communications system. And, I'd like to add you as a writer at my mobile blog, www.mobileroyale.co.cc, PM me and let me know your ideas.

you're welcome bro. ya i know that they haven't covered the whole island properly yet & some of those covered areas are having only 2G-2.5G. but hopefully they will improve during the next few months.

no...the interconnection issue was settled last month. the other operators had to abide by the rules set by TRC & finally the agreed to provide interconnection to airtel at the same rate.

about the towers, Airtel's network implementation is also done by Huawei. i think you made a mistake when talking about 3G towers here. because Dialog's 3G towers were built by Ericsson & Mobitel's towers by Huawei. so you have mixed up those two. pls refer the following links for correct details...

http://www.mobitel.lk/about/news_press_releases/news_press_m3.html

http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/Jan2007/4148.htm

so we can assume that the power of Airtel towers will be somewhat similar to those of Mobitel's.

finally i'm sorry to say that i can't share any official emails of Airtel with you.

Thanks buddy. Yes, they are 075. You are correct. I don't know whether their Rs.300 premium package is a hoax, but definitely would be Sri Lanka's first ever post paid hot cake package if launched. Have you got any info on tariffs ? Which areas do they plan to have covered prior to launch ? Not a big deal right, they can use Mobitel towers which were also set up by Huawei. Any other info ?

you're welcome bro. sorry but as far as i know they haven't decided the tariffs yet. it will be decided by their marketing dept just before the commercial launch upon considering the current market situation. they're planning to cover the entire western province before the launch & all the main highways & cities thereafter. yes they're rapidly putting up equipments on SLT & Mobitel towers these days.
