(Lanka-e-News 23.Aug.2009 6.00PM) Two individuals who were in remand for nearly two years on charges of suspected links with the LTTE and assisting them were released by Courts last week.
Sunira Priyankara Bopage and Sarathchandra labeled as ‘Sinhala Tigers’ were held in custody without any charges being framed. The suspects were released on a fundamental rights petition filed by them.
As it was revealed to Courts that there are many prisoners similarly held in custody as “Sinhala Tigers” and they are being subjected to humiliating treatment , the Welikada Magistrate ordered the Prison Officials to forward a report in this connection.
