Well, I said virtually because to hit 2x performance, I will need an nVidia 680i based motherboard and DDR2 RAM which can do 1.066GHz!!! But 3.2GHz is possible with either of those motherboards (965DS3 and P5B)

Of course I get a performance of a 3.2GHz CPU!!! Why not? In fact MORE!!! Because 3.2GHz CPU can be running at FSB1066 by default. Overclocked 3.2GHz CPU is running at much higher FSB (~1800MHz)

Remember, 2.93GHz CPU is US$900. And it can't be overclocked beyond 3.4GHz on stock cooling. Same speed can be achieved with a US$183 CPU. What the hell!!!

No it doesn't. Unless you increase the voltage more than 1.5V (default is 1.325V).

Because 2.93GHz CPU = overclocked 2.4GHz CPU (by increasing multiplier). Same hardware. Even the same stock cooler.

Besides, I'm not intending to use a CPU for more than 5 years.

well this changes time to time AMD had their crown over Intel last two three years but after Core2 were introduced everything changed.Core2 procs are better in power consumptions performance and from everythig.Remember this valid only for Core2 procs not for old Pentium Ds.when considering Ds AMD are a hell of a Better processors.If u are not planning to buy a Core2,you definetly must go for an AMD

But you can't find any AthlonX2 here in Sri Lanka; at least not as easily as any other CPUs. No point looking at single core CPUs anymore. PentiumD is not bad at all - the prices are very good. Only drawback is the high power consumption. If you don't go for the best video card in the world, these CPUs will not bottleneck in any way.

Dont go for a AMD here in LK if you dont find the CPU and mobo.If uve got both in hand safe and sound..then go 4 it..else never do that..F***ing PC house,PC partner said they bring in X2s so I got my mobo only frm USA.Bastards have never even seen an X2..

X2 AMD is very rare in LK.I bought an AMD X2 4800+ for Rs.27000 few months ago From EPSI but now they are not in stocks.the great Problem with Ds is its heat dissipation a bad architecture done by intel.just around Rs12000 u can buy a D.but most friend of mine who bought Ds are looking for 3rd party coolers worth 5-8k Rs..scared to end up with a blown proc.contrasting AMD is much cool and stable.If u not any high end user i suggest buying a decent AMD.

Lolz... Nothing wrong with the cooler provided by intel... It does its job pretty nicely... Who says tht Pentium D has a bad architecture... I've never seen such a thing.. It uses the P 4 architecture... nothing NEW or wierd... Of course... power consumption is an issue, but when compared to Core 2s only... No BIG differnce btwn X2s n Ds...
U knw.. if ur processor get blown.. n EPSI don't hv stock.. Ha ha.. U''ll have to.. Ha ha! So I do not stand with ur SUGGESTION...

AMD is not boasting about their new Barcelona proc.Even Intel have understod that they will be facing a quad-core war again intel will drop their Quad core prices a lot of a hell,as they faced with AMD dual core-DUO which was won by AMD above 1 and half years ago.coz Intel didn't show up for that coz they realized dat they will never able to beat athlon beast.but now the situation is changed.Core2 is the best proc you can depend on by this time.But AMD will rule Future after arriving of Barcelona Core .And after some time Intel will come up with a Better solution then AMD then Intel this loop will never end.

I will damage my hearing if I stayed at your place for more than a day because of the loudness of the fan.

Of course Pentium4 is a bad design. Even the 3GHz P4's has a TDP of 100W!!! 100 for a single core!!! (not sure how much it actually consumed; should be around 80-90W). That's exactly why PentiumD's TDP is/was out of this world.

However, now the higher end AthlonX2s are also hitting 89W-125W region, especially the 3GHz ones. There are Energy Efficient models as well, but they are usually 2.2GHz max.
