There were no signs of the disaster to come when he was a student at Trinity College Kandy. A studious student, described by his peers as quiet and unremarkable, Sarath Silva studied law at the Law College in Colombo and joined the Attorney General’s Department as a Crown Counsel. At the AG’s Department he rose through the ranks to become Deputy Solicitor-General. Here he was seen as one of the brightest, and was highly regarded. His two decades at the AG’s Department passed without a hint of controversy. His appointment to the Appeal Court in 1987 by President J.R. Jayewardene was seen as well-deserved.
