Both are equally imporatant.

On a scale of 1 to 10, which one would you rank higher.. (higher means more important that is) Nightlife or Hygiene & Pollution?

That rating has been given from the point of view of how those cities fare for expacts.

How does that change the quality of living of that particular country?

Now you're asking for personal preference. Fine. I rate them 5 each.

What expats expect from a city and what locals expect are not always the same. That rating was done on how desirable a city is for expats to settle in those cities.

Well if that's your personal preference then I cannot say anything.. but as an expat already living in a another country, I prefer a more hygienic and clean environment.. than Nightlife!!

I still don't see how it can drastically change the ultimate result... And also not all the determinants in this research were published so we do not know how "expat specific" is this research!

Where in those ratings are cities of Japan and korea listed ? Why do you think they are not among the top ten ?

Get me all 39 determinants and the complete methodology of the research, then probably I can tell you why!

If I had those, I dont need you to tell it to me. :P
Use your common sense, Both those countries have single race communities (ok there is a 0.1% of other races there too) and their cities are not geared to handle outsiders even though korea is working hard to change that situation with their tourist promotions. This is the primary reason why those cities are not among the top ten desirable cities even though their cities have a high standard of living, etc.

Well... I don't think your common sense is getting what I'm trying to say here!

Let me try this again...

I'm trying to tell you that these people have conducted a research by looking at 39 different determinants in each country and after analyzing them, and there maybe a final score that each country getting based on these 39 aspects... but each determinant may carry different weight too...

So you are taking one of them and asking me.. whether this could effect or not? well it certainly would.. but how do we know what percentage that particular determinant carries to the final score with regard to this research?

So while your common sense is telling.. that Nightlife vs. Pollution & hygiene should be rated same, my common sense telling me that Pollution & hygiene should be more important... even for an EXPAT!! Since we have 2 different perspectives on things....we both need to see what they think is important which is their methodology!!

    So my question to you!

How can you come to a definitive answer of how the countries being rated here without actually reviewing their research methodology?

Tokyo and Seoul are two commercial cities, so there is no quality of life in those cities, that is the main reason for there downgrade. It's the same story for other major cities like London, New York etc. Those cities fare thousand time better than Seoul in any category but still they are far below for the same reason.

Well if they have given such prominence to the nightlife, those top three cities will never be in the top ten! Those are few of sleepiest cities in Euorope during the night. Zürich is little better but not as vibrant one must expect. And Bern, it's dead city during the night.

Tokyo and Seoul are not the only cities those 2 countries has. Japan certainly has more cities both commercial and non commercial that has high quality of living but both countries has a problem with making their cities visitor (expat) friendly.

The prominence of night life was a personal preference asked from me by another member. I did not say that its a factor in this list.

BTW, what the heck is the matter with this reply box ? every time I click the quote button to type my reply, the text box doesnt have a cursor and I cant move the cursor to any line as well. Have to refresh the screen to get the reply box working.

Now you got the point! thats why I said if not present problem, Colombo would have been in a better position, certainly better than Mumbai and Jakartha. Colombo is one of the most visitor friendly cities in the region.
