Betelguese නැත්තං α Orionis තාරකාව තවත් වර්ශ 1000 ක් ඇතුලතදී නියතවශයෙන්ම 2 මට්ටමේ සුපර්නෝවා පිපුරුක් සමග දැවී විනාසවන බව තාරකා විද්‍යාඥයන් පවසති. හෙට දිනයේ එය සිදු උනොත් පෘථිවියේ සිට ආලෝක වර්ශ 600 ඈතින් පිහිටි මෙය තවත් සූර්යයකු සේ රාත්‍රීකාලයේ දිස්විය හැකිය. මේම තාරකාවට ප්‍රථිවියේ සිටින ජීවීන්ට කිසිදු හානියක් නොකලහැකි නමුත් 2012 ලෝක විනාශයේ එක සාධයක් හැටියට මේක විග්‍රහ කරන ලදි. එයට හේතුව මේය යෝධ තාරකාවක් (Supergiant) වීම නිසාය. මුලදී මෙයින් ගැමා කිරණවිහිදුවා එමගින් ප්‍රථිවියේ වායුගෝලය අයනීකරණය(Ionizing) වීම නිසා ජීවීන් වඳවී හැකිබව පවසන ලදි .මෙයද කාලයකට පෙර අපගේ සූර්යයා වැනිතරුවක් වී ඇති බව එහි ස්කන්ධයෙන් (Solar Mass) පෙනේ. දැනට සොයාගෙන ඇති දත්ත අනුව විශ්වයේ ඇති තරු අතර වඩාත්ම දිලිසෙන(Magnitude) 9 වෙනිතරුව මෙයයි.

මෙවැනි ප්‍රපංච(Phenomena) කිසි දිනක ජ්‍යෝතිශ්‍යයෙන් මාර්ගයෙන් දැනගත නොහැකි බව අමුතුවෙන් කීමට අවශ්‍ය නොවේ. ​

What the article fails to mention is the possibility that Betelgeuse has already gone supernova! From Earth, we'd only see the light from its supernova approximately 500 years after the fact.

Ever since learning about Betelgeuse, it has been my singular lifelong wish that I could be alive to witness this one-in-many-many-lifetimes event! Assuming Betelgeuse is exactly 500 light years away, it had to have gone supernova no later than 460 years ago in order for me to see it sometime in the next 40 years (assuming I'm alive for at least another 40 years). But since even the distance to Betelgeuse isn't known for certain, the timing may be off by oh, some 100 years, give or take. And then of course there's the estimated time of death for Betelgeuse, narrowed down to between about 600 years ago to several million years from now.

Haven't done the math, but I bet my chances of winning the latest Powerball lottery would've looked great next to these odds. My wish to witness Betelgeuse's supernova is probably akin to an organism whose lifespan is merely 1 minute, wishing & hoping, that at some point during that 1 minute of its life, it will experience a total solar eclipse directly overhead.

And yet, I'm still hoping! My tombstone will read either, "Died happy cuz Betelgeuse died first!" or more likely, "Died waiting for Betelgeuse (to die)."

Yeah. I should probably move on.
