The local government elections which are to be held next year are to be postponed for 2011, an official source said yesterday.
The government has decided on this course of action on the basis that due to the number of elections held back-to-back the government risked losing its popularity.
The Local Government term ends next April and according to the Provincial Election Act the elections can be held one year prior to or after the due date. As such it had been decided to hold the local government elections in 2011.
Deputy elections Commissioner W.P Sumanasiri said they were still awaiting written instruction on the postponement.
