An evaluation carried out by the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRCSL) on the quality of services including speeds of
fixed broadband services has revealed that the speeds of majority of the services fell short of the rate of speed being advertised
and hovered within the range of 10% to 25% of the advertised bandwidth during peak hours. TRCSL chairman Anusha Palpita said
new standards would be enforced soon for all broadband services to ensure proper speeds.
“The speed is the key factor in the delivery of broadband services,” he said.
“True potential of the service cannot be realised until such time the speed is kept high.
“A slow speed broadband service impacts negatively on broadband growth in the country and in turn retards its
contribution to the country’s socio-economic development,” he added.
A Defence Ministry report, meanwhile, said it granted clearance for construction of 839 towers for telecommunication
service providers this year. Accordingly, Etisalat Lanka (Pvt) Ltd was granted clearance to build 253 towers while Mobitel
was granted permission to build 188 towers. In addition, Dialog Telekom has received permission to put up 133 towers,
Hutchison Telecommunication Ltd 112 towers, Airtel 129 and Lanka Bell some 14 towers.
Do we have any authority that we could report this in SL?
