Broadcasting Sri Lanka 2008 the first ever mass communication technology conference and exhibition will be held 12th to 14th of June 2008 at BMICH . The event coincided with the Sumathi Awards 2008

"We are behind schedule as for the migration of the digital transmission of television", Sumathi Managing Director Group of Companies Thilanga Sumathipala said..

Mr. Sumathipala said that the confernace will opportunity to discuss the matters relating to the broadcasting industry on national importance.

"This conference will provide an opportunity and the ideal environment for all those in all aspects of television production, transmission and reception to familiarize themselves with the salient points and find out the solutions to the challenges of transiting from Analogue to Digital television. Dr. D. B. Nihalsinghe will be the person who will chair the conference as well as the technical committee" Mr. Sumathipala added.

Complementing Broadcast Sri Lanka 2008 is its flagship exhibition showcasing the latest digital multimedia technology and professional industry equipment and services exhibiting companies. The conference is aimed at standardizing migration to Digital by developing a consensus on the migration pathways. It will address key topics of importance which will affect all those involved in the television industry in converting from analogue to digital of all televisions stations, production houses, producers, directors, technicians and suppliers of TV equipment.

The other key areas to be discussed at the conference will be topics such as should Sri Lanka change into digital only or go directly for high direction television, issues in television production, issues in sound recording, transmission and reception, issues relating to existing TV receivers after migrating to digital, Issues of regulation and a template for the migration process.

The key note address will be delivered by Asian Broadcast Union In Kaula Lampur Head of Studio Practices Rukmin Wijemanne. The other technical and resource persons will be Rupavahini Engineering Director Rohan Perera, Sirasa Engineering Director Tharaka Mohotty, Swarnavahini Head of IT and Post Production Ratna Kariyawasam, Rosmand Senaratne, Dr. Hans Wijeyasuriya and Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Technical Director H. Ranathunga.

Digital Television is a new digital broadcast standard where images and sound are captured using the same digital code found in computers and hence improving the picture and sound quality in comparison to the current analogue television technology. Digital television will allow stations to broadcast programs much higher resolution and clarity standard analogue television which is called high definition television or HDTV. This will enable viewers at home to receive high quality crystal clear pictures. In Sri Lanka varying stages of digital transit exist with areas such as editing being fully digital cameras partially digital while areas such as transmission as reception are not digital at all.
