Buddhism Mind and the Universe
Article 1.
Buddhism mind and society are interrelated
Buddhist teaching is common for whole mankind in the world but it is very deep. If any one translates Buddhist Dhamma books ( books on Buddhism or the content philosophy ) into your language you can understand that it is for your own benefits. Also try to find out one incident related to your own life and apply that into the following 2 categories, analyze, slowly and steadily, step by step, then, (within 2 or 3 months later ) you may realize where are you. Continue, same and you definitely shall come know that what type of category does your incident belonged to. It shows that what ever the position you hold in the society is immaterial because we are all dominated by the 6 basic roots shown below.
A. Category
( a ) Greed ( b ) Anger ( c ) Ignorance (inability to understand something as it is, Eg. All
- conditioned things are impermanent )
B. Category
( a ) Generosity ( b ) Kindness ( c ) Wisdom ( in an understanding position- everything -
- Conditioned are liable to change or no ego entity)
Most conflicts from individual to international level from the latter part of 20th century world seems to be based on the root causes shown in “ A Category ”. So majority of modern society is paralyzed and dead spiritually and intellectually at least at 75 to 80 percentage and almost all the people have become the slaves of wealth and social status which is a very miserable situation as far as our civilized and educated society is concerned.
I take very simple examples such as in our modern society there are highly educated scientists, experts in various fields…etc. who are involved in the invention of high-explosives which can destroy large areas with living beings, which may result in the whole world being polluted in the near future. Why do these educated people waste their knowledge to kill innocent beings because they have not yet realized serious repercussion or in other words they are blind spiritually.
Various careless activities in health field, productions of narcotics are few of many where educated groups are also involved in, but they should not be blamed because they are ignorant intellectually even though highly educated. What makes them to be such.The answer is none other than low level thoughts generated by “ A Category. Their main target is to achieve and hoard what they have seen.
If I ask a question “ if this is the result of education, what role does the budgets allocated for education in any country play?
I kindly and humbly appeal to such gentlemen to be free from such unfortunate situations otherwise you have to under go very miserable plights mentally or physically or both in the future as nature attends to all impartially irrespective of your place in the society. That is the result of the unwholesome actions which, in Buddhism, is identified as Kamma and its associated results. Any action is done by wrong views result will be very painful .Happiness can be expected if you do any action with purified mind. In deeper sense Buddhism explains this as “ Patichcha Samuppada or Dependant Arising “ )
Category B
If any action or thought is based on “B Category “ you can be happy which makes your whole body balance well. In turn you become healthy which has now been accepted by Modern medical science. This theory has been revealed by Lord Buddha 2500 years ago without modern scientific and technical machineries.
The energy of thoughts generated by purified or corrupted mind and the formation of such energy could create peaceful places or miserable places, after the death, like Heaven and Hell respectively . Every thought changes our mind and whole body which cannot be seen or sensed but changes take place continuously. Mind always links with the Universe at the a correct point. Every thought creates a suitable point any where else in the universe where it can attach and disappears same when the thought changes. This unending process continues from no limit past to unending future. With the death of a person the activation of the last thought is subjected to above theory which is a universal truth. (Those who are annihilated all defilements are exceptional cases.) This point in the universe may be a realm for Human beings, Gods. Animals, Ghosts, Hell….Etc. This process continues whether we are aware of it or not, believe or not. Time calculation on this is beyond our measuring units. Trillion and trillion processes may take place in a nano second or many more and really no one can imagine and no machine can be invented to calculate the actual speed of the beat of the mind.
This is how the Mind and the Universe are bound together. How does the mind function and on what basis does it depend? This group of word is very simple. But what is inside is very deep. The Buddhism identified, classified and clarified root causes that strengthen and weaken the mind and the effect that is on self and world. So Buddhism introduced the correct path of how to make use of mind for the benefit of self and others, how to create a happy and peaceful world, how to cease unending sufferings due to unlimited births. In brief Buddhism shows how to annihilate all defilements in our mind which has caused
the repetition of births. In this path no cheating, no unhappy incidents, no blood shed can be experienced neither in history nor in present and future. “ Conversion by Compulsion “ can never be seen or experienced in Buddhist Teaching.
Lord Buddha was well equipped with truth, loving compassion, boundless love and wisdom, wonderful capability of reading others’ mind, and such qualities helped Him to win the hearts of the people. Also He made the people understand that all can become enlightened one or Buddha if they select the correct path and cultivate essential qualities which lead to enlightenment. Such bold statement could never or hardly be heard from a Leadership. Freedom of “ first to practise and to accept ” is most important philosophical quality of His teaching.
Cessation of birth
As said above circle of birth depend on thoughts associated with our mind weather they are good or bad. Thought is some sort of energy flow which associates with brain and body. If thoughts give birth or cause to continue cycle of birth what we people should do to stop unending births? (Samsara in Buddhist teaching ) Now it is very clear that if you want to stop unlimited births you have to stop the flow of unlimited thoughts. This is the only way to stop future births. If any person could eradicate all thoughts (defilements) in the mind he is one of the wisest and happiest persons in the world because he is free from being born and free from all sufferings. This is called in teaching of Buddhism - “ Nibbana.”
How to, identify and control of unending flow of thoughts which cannot be seen and tangible? First we have to familiar with our mind, Secondly we have to alert on thoughts. When tranquility or calmness of the mind is established you can achieve expected calmness. Where there is no calmness in the mind no concentration at all. That is where you and I have to develop Moral purity, then Concentration and finally Wisdom.
Moral purity
Pl. adhere to Five precepts ( 1 ) Refraining from harming or killing beings,
( 2 ) Refraining from stealing,
( 3 ) Refraining from wrong sensual pleasure
( 4 ) Refraining from telling lies,
( 5 ) Refraining from having intoxicants.
Lord Buddha never preached Dhamma even to a single Buddhist. If you apply above 5 precepts to your
life you will become one of the civilized and religious persons irrespective of your present religion you are
intellectually bound to. This arrangement will positively make any society peaceful, healthy and
prosperous and this is a Universal Laws which None can deny.
