Nearly 15,000 canteens and food outlets island-wide have been severely affected and closed in the recent weeks due to the domestic LP gas shortage and higher prices of vegetables, said Chief of All Ceylon Canteen Owners’ Association Asela Sampath.
Speaking to the Daily News yesterday, he said the shortage of milk powder also has directly affected their business.
He said many of the food outlets have refused to accept orders for food items such as cakes, sweets and biryani for the upcoming festive season due to the shortage of gas and other ingredients and the higher prices of ingredients.
There will be further disturbances to their businesses due to the LP gas-related issues and until the standard gas supply is restored.
Sampath said the authorities at the top positions have failed to correctly identify the difficulties faced by the canteen and food outlet owners. That is why these authorities are not ready to invite the owners for any meeting to discuss their issues.
He also requested the authorities to appoint him as the Chief of the Consumer Affairs Authority and give an opportunity to provide real solutions to the burning issues at the grassroots level.
