The glaring exposure of the self-styled Free Media Champion and former Director of the CPA (Centre for Policy Alternatives) Media Unit Sunanda Deshapriya as an embezzler has further confirmed the bogus nature of the 'peaceniks.'

The CPA has accepted Deshapriya's, resignation according to a statement issued by its Executive Director, CPA, Dr. Pakyasothy Saravanamuttu. He said Deshapriya who was associated with the CPA since 2002, "has personally returned in full the money owed to the organisation after an investigation into the financial anomalies of a project that he was responsible for."

The so-called Free Media Movement (FMM) of which Deshapriya was the Convenor is an affiliated member of the International Federation of Journalists with him being the Sri Lankan contact. He was also the South Asia Coordinator of the International News Safety Institute (INSI). International Media Support (IMS) also had close contact with Deshapriya when they developed a distorted country report on Sri Lanka with his assistance.

The FMM and Deshapriya blamed the Government and the Sri Lankan military on many an occasion without a scrap of evidence thereby supporting the LTTE's allegations of human rights violations by the Sri Lankan State. Deshapriya led the charge against the Government at the first exploiter meeting held with the visiting International Mission on Press Freedom Mission on October 10, 2006

This despicable hypocrite and virulent critic of "Sinhala Buddhist Chauvinism" being caught with his pants down is retribution coming to him at last. He is the scum who accused SLBC Chairman Hudson Samarasinghe of insulting (over the Isira Radio Channel) LTTE female suicide bombers by calling them prostitutes.

Samarasinghe demanded to know from Deshapriya whether he was planning to insure the virginity of Tigresses. This was a hard hitting response to the latter's baseless criticism of Isira's reportage of the Tigresses linked to the attack on the Air Force Base, Anuradhapura.

When Deshapriya alleged that Isira radio had sullied their character reporting that they were engaged in the world's oldest profession, Samarasinghe asked "Then what should be they called – the purest of maidens?" He drew attention to the arrest of three suspected Tigresses in connection with a plot to assassinate President Mahinda Rajapaksa. These women too were engaging in the same 'business' since being a sex worker is a good cover for intelligence gathering and getting closer to certain people.

Responding to Deshapriya's allegation that Isira was propagating "Sinhala Buddhist Nationalist ideology" the Samarasinghe said that he is an idiot unfit to be the head of any media movement.

Deshapriya has almost never condemned LTTE atrocities. His Tiger links were exposed when the LTTE reportedly threatened to abduct Free Media Movement's treasurer unless 1500 U.S. dollars were paid to the LTTE. How did the latter know that the FMM was being paid in dollars? Or was part of the money intended for the Tigers too but which the 'free media' champions had pocketed? To cover it up Deshapriya tried to give the impression that the demand was made in local currency – Rs. 450,000.

During a television debate with former DIG (Crimes) H.M.G.B. Kotakadeniya, a few years ago, Deshapriya expressed his strong disapproval of Kotakadeniya calling Sri Lanka a predominantly Sinhala Buddhist country. Deshapriya angrily emphasized that this country is "a multi-religious and multi-ethnic society."

As far as patriots are concerned his downfall is really a case of thieves falling out. There is no better proof that to the likes of the CPA and the 'National Peace Council' peace-making is nothing but a big business. If Deshapriya has been found guilty for swindling Rs. 200,000 and probes are underway regarding frauds amounting to millions of rupees, imagine the amount of foreign funding these NGO do-gooders are receiving to lead comfortable lives under the guise of promoting peace and ethnic harmony.

In a nutshell the Deshapriya affair is a case of thieves failing to share the spoils to each crook's satisfaction - because NGO peace-making is one big fraud.
In contrast none of the organizations that stand vehemently opposed to LTTE separatism and terrorism receive a cent from Western or any other foreign source. All what these patriotic groups gets are funds collected by Sri Lankan expatriates abroad. It is a small wonder that they lack the facilities to get their message
