    Appu Army

Sport has always drawn crowds, even in the most hostile conditions. Tuesday morning in Canberra was no different with dark grey clouds looming ominously. Rains lashed the Manuka Oval from between seven and half past ten, raising doubts if any game was possible in the first place.

That didn't dampen the hundreds who started gathering outside the oval in little flocks at the scheduled start time (10 am). For them, despite the weather, the game was still on. And like in every crowd, where there is a bunch that stands out with its characteristic fervour, there was one here too making heads turn. Shaking their bodies and tapping their feet, they created a buzz with their livewire intensity.

The Appu Army, the latest addition to the existing bunch that includes the Barmy Army (England), Wave the Flag (Australia) and Bharat Army (India), were here to follow their side closely. The pouring rain didn't matter to them. They had come down from Sydney in droves. Their red coloured T-shirts made them stand out and were joined by their friends in hay-coloured sombrero-hats.

They kept playing the distinctive bayla tune that lets you know the Sri Lankans are around. The Appu Army was in full swing and lent a carnival-like atmosphere as they marched up and down the main drag behind the Don Bradman stand inside the ground. The horns and the whistles kept blowing, so did the conch shells and the hand bells. So festive was the atmosphere that it was difficult for the Indians not to soak it in.

Interestingly there were a few Tamils wearing red T-shirts with a map of Sri Lanka that had "Voice of Tamils. Where's humanity" painted across the north and east, which has borne the bulk of the violence over the past few decades. Jacobs agrees sport is one of the best mediums to get the message of peace across. "Cricket is one game that gets both the Tamils and the Sinhalese together which is such a good thing". It was definitely the case at the Manuka Oval, where ethnic Tamils were seen mingling freely with the Sinhalese. In the aftermath of the Harbhajan Singh-Andrew Symonds affair, where cricket was pushed to the background and the crowds turned partisan, this was a happy turn of events.

    Does it matter!

Well even I was skeptic about this "red t-shirt black map on" cult at 1st but since there wasn't any protest going on against them so far, I wasn't quite sure to accuse them as LTTE supporters. :baffled: :baffled:

    dude,

I have a question 4 you 1st... have you been out of sri lanka(i dont kno where u located)sorry if your out of country...

but if you been out of the country and to countries that large sl communities living you will c that they not bothered weather ur tamil or sinhala or muslim as long as ur a human vth a good heart.they share all there joy vth all those ppl...our stupid politics wont b there to creat problems.

As an example in my uni there are sinhala, tamil and muslim students from SL. majority is muslims and then sinhaleess then tamilians. but when some1 asked from us where v from v all say v ar from sri lanka..when the world cup was going on we all gathered around the tv and cheered to our heroes together. and all of us danced 4 da papare beat. and i kno 4 a fact dis happened all the universities around the world that Sl students studing...you can chek if u want..

Wut i have to say 4 appu army is also the same...most of the ppl in it are Uni student from SL. and they not just bothered abut weather ltte or Jvp or unp or slfp members join them to support the SRI LANKAN CRICKET TEAM. They just want to cheer up and give courage to our cricket heroes.

So pls dont try to juggle words from an article and say that Appu army is LTTE.

you probably watch the match in ur house nicely siting. or may b you didnt even bother. but those ppl bought a icket(not cheap) and went there skiping there uni classes, jobs n etc just to go cheer there heroes.

And im in malaysia and we all planing to go cheer our under19 cricket team as a appu army.if you c any article abut that tell Lttle Appu army latest branch in Malaysia.

you shud be proud abut appu army...when the SL team is lost and playing vth out any boost while getting bombarded from aus supporters... those are the ppl who stud up to it... NOT U...

so think properly...if u cant dont post stpid things and make this foram also LTTE

ppl like you only support LTTE... not normal tamilians....

    i am a 100% buddhist sinhaleess. A sri lankan....

    shame on you dude

I have a question! as you said people unite as one as in JVP, UNP, SLFP are fine! So you think LTTE also should be treated the same way? And in the same bunch just because they are in Australia?
