i'm not too sure about ccna but in general with other certifications, expire means you can't officially sign off on private projects. the certification just needs to be renewed to keep it valid for official purposes.

pointless to renew if you have years of hands on exp , unless your working for company highly depend on knowledge on latest technology, vulnerabilities , updates on physical or hardware systems.
if your freelancer , consultant better to update or running a networking service company.

ones you have passed it consider you have the relevant vendor practice to deal with shit and your knowledge level.
