who cares?
the romantic movement

it seems like many do not have an idea about the Romantic Movement & before i put down my comment i will give a small understandable review on that........

In the history of western music, "Romanticism" is the main feature of the "Romantic Period" dated from 1810 till 1910.
The composers of this period were not satisfied with the traditional structure of music because of its limitations to express their true feelings through music. So they tried to overcome this particular barrier by breaking the traditional structure whenever there is a difficulty of expressing their ideas.

They believed that this is a free movement that allows them use their skills to do compositions which would be more natural, artful & sensible to music and their sole ambition was to create music that could amaze them as well as the audience. For this they never hesitate to depart from the traditional styles and put emotions above form(structure).
In short these composers were much more interested in what they say rather than the musical form, technique or perfection of their work like the composers before them.

Unlike others romantic composers were often inspired by literary, pictorial, and other non musical sources as well. So poetry of the 18th and 19th centuries formed the basis of art songs in which the composer portrayed with music the imagery and moods of the texts.
This movement was a major effort of Beethoven which became successful in the end of the 17th century and his many late compositions are noticeably influenced by it.(eg. The Pathetique Sonata, Eroica symphony)

The other notable composers are:
Franz Schubert, Carl Maria Von Weber,Hector Berlioz, Franz Liszt,Robert Schumann,Johannes Brahms,Richard Strauss,Giuseppe Verdi,Richard Wagner,Felix Mendelssohn
,Frederic Chopin,Anton Devorak,Claude Debussy etc.

yeah..
There are couple of influences behind the formation of this kind of music style..

During 18th centuary, programs were tend to come up with 'program music' which is a type of art music intended to evoke extra-musical ideas, images in the mind of the listener by representing a scene, image or mood musically.

Also the events and changes that happen in society affects the music.(this is what's happenning in SL now.. Iraj and others fools ' music is just a reflection of the society) The Industrial Revolution was in full effect by the late eighteenth early nineteenth centuries and that might affect the romantic style of music...

The other reason is the 'rise of the middle class'. Well.. w.r.t. to Sri Lankany modern society.. this is really a negative factor.. During the romatic period there were a lot of people (in fact many rich people ) who loves and are addicted to this kind of music. That why its get so popular and many composers were not afraid to compose music with the free flow... But in Sri Lanka .. its the total opposite ... I don't think even 1% of Sri Lankan music listerns would love to listen to this type of music.. That's why Kasun is not so popular in the society while fools are very popular.. (fool = Iraj, Chinthi, 'you name it')
Also most of the Sri Lankans still consider H.R. Jothipala as the greatest musician every produced by SL.(however I like some songs of Jothipala.. and I'm not trying to say he is not talented... He is far far better than most musicians in the modern society).. I don't know why people think in such manner... I don't know why they can't understand the value of Ameradeva or Kemadasa.

Finally... Chaminda has just started his radical work.. Romantic music is not just something formed just by a single composer (or lyrist) but a collaboration of many artist..so we need many artist like Chaaminda, Kasun, Indrachapa, Nadeeka etc. Also the composers in Romantic perioid were more or less inspired from the greats'' like W.A. Mozart and Hayden... So SL guys need to do that as well : learn the best Sri Lankan music from their ancestors like Amaradeva.. Victor.. Sunil Edirishinghe... Kemadasa.. etc
