A CID Chief Inspector and another man were arrested this afternoon after they were seen by villagers dumping a body in the sea at Paliwasalpaduwa in Mundalama, Puttalam. A double cab used for the crime was also seized.

The Mundalama police told Daily Mirror online villagers in the area had alerted the police by dialing 119 after they saw two men dumping a body from a cab into the sea this afternoon. The Mundalama police then followed the double cab and arrested the suspects.


The two suspects had shows their identification documents and one man was identified as Chief Inspector Chandana de Silva from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) while the other suspect is said to be a resident of Wellawatte.


Police say the victim, a man believed to be around 40 years of age, was killed by chocking. A pistol and a cord were recovered from the double cab used in the crime.

UPDATE:

A CID officer and an restaurant owner from Wellawatte who allegedly dumped a body into the sea in the Mundalama Puttalam were arrested this morning, Police said.

The two men traveling in a double cab had thrown the body into sea when a villager had alerted the 119 giving the number of the vehicle - WP - LJ 0010.

Police later tracked down the vehicle and arrested the persons and one of them had produced his CID identity card identifying himself as Chief Inspector Pushpalal Silva. With him was the owner of an restaurant in Wellawatta identified as Rajkumar, 35.

The victim has been identified as Thennarasu Selvaraja, an Indian national who had been reportedly employed at the restaurant of one of the suspects.

Initial investigations appear to show that the man had been strangulated to death, but the suspects claim that the man had committed suicide and they had attempted to dispose off the body.
