Hi all srilankan or srilankan favor gamers, game developers and game designers, Advisers......

I'm doing a survey why srilankan want develop games recently!!! Even when ppls have ability they want develop any.. may be they say financial problems, shortage of knowledge. But think why we dont develop our own games as we can .. may be some tell oh nonsense can we compete with game development company like EA, UBsoft, codemaster sure no !!! they are really big companies. But think if we just target local community this will be very big step for begging.. I'm sure communities like "Elakiri" will give very good positive feed back!

Real problem is countries like srilanka will always licking their lips (including me) to download or buy pirate copy's. But it'll not be a problem when companies like microsoft put there hands in to business it will be end of some of pirate software and games.

I really appreciate person who build "Mission Thoppigala" the shooting game.
( that's the only game I know as build in SL if some have other than that plz post)

Anyway as I think we need to build community that can do such good games.. so I need a survey before start that sort of work.. I'm not expert in 3d game designing but I can build games using softwares like FLASH !!

I think that's the suitable position to start our gaming revolution! so ppls what do u say! do u like to just keep playing game like crysis or far cry orr do u want to play games build in Srilanka. if you interested in this subject plz email @ [email protected]

I'll launch a website about this soon...

Any suggestions, complains appreciated

Im in bro; I have some experience in VB6 and a lil bit of c++[still learning]
For those who are interested in OpenGL(for those who dont know: its similar to DirectX in linux, but its Open and faster than DirectX and is available for a huge number of platforms;unlike directx) goto nehe.gamedev.net for some samples on OpenGL. If anyone is thinking of making games[3D]; your first step is to learn c++ then other stuff will be easier for you. Thanks for putting a thread like this coz in SL we mostly find USERS not CREATORS ....
For OpenGL in VB6 anyone can contact me via PMs ...I'll try to help from what i know ....and people believe me OpenGL is a very easy to learn 3D platform when compared with directx.

thanks for reply! your correct as beginners in this kind of industry we should use that kind of technology ! I'm no familiar with C++ but i know all the computer languages just have little differences. thanks for u'r advice....

In previous posts one tell me that SL's looking for strategy games... so if we can do it with OpenGL Lets start with OpenGl...........

Addition to that there is a Java library specifically designed to build games
http://lwjgl.org/

It handles,
Input,
Audio,
Graphics

with relatively easily than C++, since It uses native interfaces it is performance is good however not high as C++, but it's relatively easy.

following game is designed using Java and actually it's kind of good one have a look,
http://tribaltrouble.com/

Thanks bro!
We need that sort of ideas keep it coming ............

In previous posts one tell me that SL's looking for strategy games... so if we can do it with OpenGL Lets start with OpenGl...........

Anything can be made with OpenGL its a the front end of a game, means that it directly handles hardware. In the middle sits a 3D game engine which has built in physics, model rendering, movement functions, In Game menus and lots of others big companies like EA makes 3D engines for games themselves its hard but its easy for the game programmers[they know what the engine can do very well]
for others who dont have enough knowledge to build an game engine there are premade ones ..(goto gamedev.net for more)
the game makers are always at the lower end its easier when they are starting from the lower end but the games performance/flexibility is limited. We can surely make a strategy game but it should be like red alert 3 not the graphics but the AI because the player is playing against the machine; we should make an module that can think and act like a commander thats the hard part in strategy games...lets see in the future if we get enough programmers with enough knowledge.
games like Op:Thoppigala are fine but a player who plays games like COD4 wont spent much time on a game like Op:Thoppigala so its no matter how hard game makers are in a competition i had an idea of making a game like prince of persia with SL history and stuff but after the ABA game came out i dropped that idea[anyway how was that game?, did anyone play?]

Here's my 2 cents..

First of all I'm not a game developer, but game developing is something fascinating because I've known such people.. they have unimaginable vision and creativity.. the idea of MrJ is so AWESOME.. I really wish I could help..

I really appreciate your vision, but at the same time I think you should also realize that this is not a single person's task... not only programmers, modelers, designers, if you really want make something impressive you would also need historians, mathematician, music composers etc. etc. for this kind of project you propose.... so i think its better to prove your talent first... and get a sponsor.. make a team.. do it as a project!

My guess is doing a strategy game is harder than doing a 1st person shooting game because it involves a lot of formulas and equations.. and if you have different clans in the game you need to balance them up.. while keeping them totally different.. so I think it might not be so easy for you guys.. but with the correct planning, hard work and ATTITUDE ya'll deffa can pull this off...

And on that day... I will be one of many who BUY your game! GOOD LUCK!!;)

hmm still havent play ABBA! who developed it? bythe way plenty of shortage of programmers is the biggest problem ! I have contacts for some srilankan students (of game development) in AUS. I'm trying to find more !!

Im waiting for my AL results im stuck on a Quiz prog for a competition these days(till Oct 30th) i made it with VB6 and OpenGL i got to know alot about OpenGL but my knowledge would not be complete without c++ m still learning i'll try my best learn it fast without an auto completor like in vb its hard to remmember all the tokens :P Good Luck on finding those students get as much as you can dont ask for their knowledge on game programing much just ask for their coding experience and AI design thats all; there are lots of resources on da net for 3D designing and importing them to an OpenGL environment search for true c++,c developers no C#,J# or any .NET people those languages eat resources we want to develop a game thats playable with normal computers

Thanks for your ideas and advice! Ya I know this going to be really hard work! but we cant let it go by saying that. we need to try, and we MUST have better plans.. but first of all I need a really hard working crew.. Ya it will take time to get stable game developing company, but this is a community rather than company ! If you can introduce ppls you know I really appreciate it! Will you mail me at [email protected]

Thanks:P

    I have another suggestion,
If we can make some online game as a start, since It's sort of hard to build a 3D game with acceptable standard at once. I would suggest if we can make something like,

    http://www.travian.com/

and host it in EK servers so that we can multi play it, that will be a good start. b/w I spend around 2-3 hours playing that game and it's extremely good strategy game.

I guess what do u say.... and also i have knowledge of Action scripting.. currently developing some simple games .. I'll post in ELAKIRI when i finished those.. It might less graphic cuz i'm not a graphic designer..lol .. I already created a carram game still have some bugs.. i'll release it soon...
