Haven't read about this before.. But copied below, I posted below on the main Corona Virus thread, yesterday and today... (Yesterday) Don't get scared or switch to panic mode. But please take care and precautions as much as possible. Also be responsible to the entire society in general. (sadly this doesn't seem to be happening with the returnees) Everyone got to understand that they can place someone older or with other medical issues at a great risk. In the absence of a proven vaccine the only hope is a potentially beneficial mutation. This is exactly what happened with SARS. As far as I could remember, it lost four segments from its viral genome, became more severe, but at the same time made it harder to transmit to humans. Currently contact tracing and containment is the key to curb the infection rates. (Today) I said the above only yesterday... Todays' news from Singapore states.... the Duke National University of Singapore team reported the protein “deletion” discovered in eight Singapore patients between February 9 and March 2 was consistent with those found at the tail end of the 2003 SARS outbreak, and could signal a weakening of the disease....... Hopefully this is good news and lead to the potential downfall of the virus. The Covid-19 was considered to be more stable than SARS or MERS but the Singaporean team noticed that a 382-nt deletion covering almost the entire 22 open reading frame 8 (ORF8) from eight hospitalized patients in Singapore. They estimate this has been happening at least during the last four weeks. The research paper is not peer reviewed as yet, but the claim has been made by a well respected researcher - Professor Linfa Wang and his team. He is the director of the Programme in Emerging Infectious Diseases at Duke-NUS Medical School, and an Honourable Professor at the University of Melbourne and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is an international leader in the field of emerging zoonotic viruses......
