China is enforcing strict new measures, including anal swab testing, as COVID-19 cases surge ahead of Lunar New Year, a time of high travel for the country.

Groups deemed necessary for "close monitoring", including international arrivals, are being subjected to four tests — a nasal swab, a throat swab, a blood test and an anal swab.

"Applying extra anal swabs can improve the detection rate of infection and reduce missed diagnosis," Li Tongzeng, associate director of respiratory and infectious diseases at Beijing's You'an Hospital, told state broadcaster Central Chinese Television (CCTV).

China has reported a sudden surge in COVID-19 infections in the country's south, with the new local cases detected in the city of Guangzhou causing a flurry of flight cancellations.

Recent infections in the city were contracted with a fast-spreading virus strain detected in India according to genome sequencing results, Chen Bin, deputy director at the city's municipal health commission, told a press conference on Sunday.

Guangzhou is considered one of the four first-tier mega cities in China, with population of over 18.67 million, according to the latest census.

The latest developments mark the first partial lockdown for a first-tier city since February.

The outbreak has also resulted in a temporary pause in vaccinations in the city.
People in China have also had their mobile phone data used for "more accurate contact tracing", Dr Yang said.

"Therefore, nobody could hide their movements," he said.

"However, the downside of the mobile phone tracing is to sacrifice people's privacy."

China has also implemented other controls not seen in other places.

In January, a student based in Australia said she received an anal swab while in quarantine in the city of Guangzhou.
