Dambulla fiasco: Normalcy returns





The Dambulla Mosque that was closed following a tense situation last Friday was reopened for prayers yesterday. Ministers A.H.M. Fowzie and Rishad Bathiudeen visited the area yesterday morning and held discussions with government officials, area residents and mosque trustees to assess the situation.

Ahmed Lebbe, one of trustees of the Mosque, told The Nation that prayers were held following discussions with all parties concerned. He also said the situation had eased by yesterday but added that police and Special Task Force (STF) personnel were still stationed to ensure law and order. “There are 35 police and STF personnel around the Mosque area,” he said.

Lebbe denied allegations that they were expanding the Mosque area, which was said to be situated within a demarcated sacred area. He said the area of the sanitary facilities had been enlarged and alleged that it was the cause for the current rumpus.

“We completely demolished the earlier construction, as it was in a very bad state and built anew. The construction was approved by the DS officials after inspection,” Lebbe added.

He claimed the mosque had been in existence for over 60 years and added the land was gazetted as sacred area only in 1982. “We are in possession of the necessary legal documents to prove our case,” he added.
