Train stops moments before hitting woman
A US woman has literally come within inches of sudden death after falling into the path of an oncoming train.
The "highly intoxicated" commuter was waiting at a north Boston station after a night out drinking when she toppled off the platform and onto the tracks.
Transit police officer Paul Carroll said that as the Orange Line train came into view, several people ran to the edge of the platform and tried to get the attention of the train's operator.
"Luckily for her, all the passengers responded very quickly in flagging down the train and the operator went into an emergency stop," he was quoted by CBS11TV.com as saying.
"(The train) just came within inches of striking (her), the front end of the train was actually over her — she was under the train."
The woman was doubly lucky in not touching the electrified third rail that powers the train.
Sergeant Carroll confirmed that the woman suffered only bruises and scrapes on her legs and knees.
A witness said commuters gave the train driver a round of applause as she pulled into the station after the track was cleared.
