Day and Night Cricket Test Matches !!! ;)

Knew that this could come about :)

Ask any old school cricketer or fan, and most of them would probably turn their noses up, but in a World with changing times, and a demand for cricket to keep with the times, day night test matches could soon be a regular occurence. It isn’t what a lot of people want to see, but Twenty20 wasn’t either, change happens though, and we hope upon hope, it is for the better.

Announced today, Bangladesh have agreed to trial day - night test cricket, when they tour England next year, no doubt a somewhat “low profile” series is the place to trial something like this, because if it goes wrong no one would probably care too much, unlike the farcical decisions we had with he review system trials. Hopefully on the review front, when it is introduced permanantly in the coming months, the ICC has taken their “elite” panel back to umpiring school for some lessons.

All that needs to be cleared now, is the ICC’s consent for a day night test match to go ahead, the whole concept sounds like a great idea, it would get the crowds in and would definitely revitalise test match cricket. But with all good ideas, there are usually some outstanding problems, and one that sticks in my mind is what colour ball do you use? Red would be fine in the day, but would there be any problems seeing it when darkness descends? White would be fine all throughout the play, but it isn’t really all that test cricket like, and with white clothing, would the ball camouflage itself? Fluorescent pink was the proposed idea at the World Cricket Commitee in July, I suppose you would be able to see it in all conditions, but it wouldn’t really seem that serious would it? Pink?! Come on this is a man’s game!! The other problem with the pink ball is if it would retain it’s colour, and would the wear and tear on it cause consistent ball changing.

Players clothing is another matter to be addressed, a call for colour clothing would be not unexpected, people would want to know what is fully going on, people that say weren’t so interested in cricket, and in the dark, it would make matters all that more simpler, personally I believe test cricket is played in whites, and under no circumstances should it be played in anything other than white. But since when did they care about what the fans think?

The ICC will meet in November with the World Cricket Commitee, the ICC has almost it appears, tried to side track this issue, something it will not be able to do much longer, a firm decision needs to be made and all matters must be looked upon. The lights have also been known to be an occasional problem, and what a joke it would be if half a days play was lost just because they couldn’t get the generator working.

Whether we, the ICC, and everybody else likes it, cricket will go where the money is,:( if the immediate future looks rosy for day night tests, it will most likely get the go ahead, but it is risky, and I believe if it is going to be introduced, it needs to be a complete package with no rough edges, and if that means delaying day nighters past May 2010 then so be it, the last thing anybody needs is a farce, because that would put anybody off, but if everybody can pull this off, it could be crickets next, “great revolution“.
