The man accused of starting a blaze which killed at least 21 people in Australia had been turned down as a volunteer fireman, it was revealed yesterday.
Scrap metal collector Brendan Sokaluk, 39, wanted to be part of the official team of voluntary firemen who tackle blazes in rural areas.
But he was rejected by the state of Victoria Country Fire Authority for reasons which have not been made public.
