Sri Lanka Dialog reports net loss in Sept quarter
Nov 13, 2008 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's Dialog Telekom group, a unit of Telekom Malaysia, has reported a loss of 192.4 million rupees for the September 2008 quarter with profits of its core business also falling steeply amid a price-war.
Revenue of Dialog's mobile division fell to 8.5 billion rupees compared to 8.6 billion in the same quarter last year and costs rose from 3.0 billion to 4.6 billion rupees.

Profits fell to 376 million from 2.7 billion rupees a year earlier, according to interim accounts filed with the Colombo Stock Exchange.

Though the price cuts had resulted in higher usage, the company says the increase in revenue was not enough to offset the rate cuts.

Sri Lanka's celcos have been aggressively cutting prices ahead of the entry of India's Bharti Airtel.

Group revenue which includes pay TV and wireless fixed grew to 9.3 billion rupees, from 8.5 billion rupees.

In the first nine months group revenues grew to 27.3 billion rupees from 25.1 billion rupees, and profits fell to a 1.0 billion rupees from 7.3 billion rupees.

Dialog said its active mobile subscriber base was 4.98 million at the end of the third quarter.

Its fixed wireless customers were at 125,000. Dialog Broadband Networks revenues were 1.7 billion rupees for the first nine months.

The company said revenues grew 49 percent over the immediate preceding quarter. Subscribers had doubled.

But it had lost 921 million rupees over the first nine months.

Dialog Television had a subscriber base of 117,500. Its revenues had grown to 911 million in the first nine months. It lost 542 million rupees in the 9-months, with a change in accounting policy.

go to hell with dialog!!! always sucked our money n now begging for profits.
its not the airtel factor dat has doomed dialog its their own policies has doomed them.
Mobitel, tigo, hutch all gave calls at lower rates with more coverage than ever in sl history.

dialog just couldn't adjust to the situation n handle it. They carried their own old tricks without giving a shit to their customers..

:( Pity on dialog workers n staff..after all its our own brothers n sisters working for it. it will effect them in a worse way. :(

u idiot...since wen did dialog become a sri lankan company its owned by telecom malaysia & the last time I checked,it wasn't a sri lankan company

the point here is only dialog is recording losses here & not the other operaters such as mobitel & Tigo cos dialog wastes too much on throwing parties to its employees & on organising company trips & so on...all these they were doing by emptying the customers pockets with their high call rates

they prospered this long mainting a virtual monopoly cos there were no other real compition from the other Sri lankan operators

But it took only Airtel..a "shitty indian company" to just announce that they were starting operation here for dialog to make losses

Ultimately its the 6 milion mobile customers who benifit from this price war & u should be also happy about it instead whining about dialog companies losses

Unless of course ur an employee in dialog & u miss the 5 star food from hilton, pizza hut, deli france they used to provide for the employees who used to work in the night shift, which the innocent customers have to bear ultimately while paying the bills

So good scene this is happening to dialog....

kala kala de pala pala de kiyanne oka thamai

do u know it was dialog who petitioned against TRC's order to make al incoming calls free in Sri lanka?? now v r the only country in asia who still pay for incoming calls due to this reason

I know a shit load of what dialog has done to push back the growth of mobile industry in Sri lanka

it aint only dialog who is suffering.... other telecom companies are also suffering... dialog is hightlighted because it was the telecom giant...

and as a matter of fact its not onlly the telecom industry that is declining... all the industries are declining... EVEN HOSPITAL INDUSTRIES !!!! showin that people are sacrificing on health facilities also to cope with the depression.. we all are heading towards a great depression...
