I think you should open this thread in the religious section!

And the answer to your question is.. NO!

My parents never laid out it on a table for me to choose, they only knew Buddhism... so like the rest of them I became a Buddhist because my parents are Buddhists!

I think this is the case with almost all of us! and whether it is right or wrong is... debatable!

    Indeed!
Though you can choose what religion you want as you learn about them.
There's no restriction saying that since your parents chose one religion for you, you cant change it.

Well although I was bought up in a Buddhist family I never really understood what Buddhism actually is until I could really compare and contrast Buddhism with other faiths!

But now I do have a greater understanding about Buddhism to say that, actually Buddhism isn't really a religion the kind that people think as a religion! What Lord Buddha did was to highlight the things that are already there... sort of a guide for you on do's and dont's, and the biggest mystery of all.... WHAT'S THE PURPOSE OF LIFE?

So I'd like to see Buddhism as a "way of life"

Bro you will have to open up these in the religious section because the Admin made it clear all such discussion must go under that section!

The thread will be moved anyway!

Good to hear that your GF is Buddhist, if you can look at Buddhism without thinking about it as a religion, you will see what I've said!

Read Dhammapada for instance, think of it as a just another book of quotes, see how meaningful it is...

yes machan my father was born to a catholic parents then converted to the budhhism 15 years ago understanding that the buddhism isn't a religion but a great philosophy of Lord Buddha. but I didn't change my religion. I am still a catholic. but I learnt and still learning lot of things from buddhism. As a catholic I can worship Islam or hindu as they are religions and I must have belief on it. but I can believe buddhism as It is a great philosophy.

i can agree with your idea in every possible way ....Buddhism is a map which leads to the NIBBANA .....

But know one can say it's not a religon ....because Buddhism contained some religon characteristics .

And buddhism is not about the purpose of life ........it's teaches us ..the way we should live our LIFE purposely........
