Mini budget is eyewash: UNP

The UNP yesterday slammed the Government’s relief package calling it an eyewash given the downward trend in the world fuel and food prices.UNP media spokesman MP Gayantha Karunatilleke told a media conference yesterday that the fuel prices had declined in the world market today on an unprecedented scale, but the Government had reduced petrol, diesel and kerosene prices by only a small margin.
Mr. Karunatilleke said that this was an exercise designed to hoodwink the masses the true situation from the people.
“Prices of food items such as milk have also come down in the world market. Earlier, the Government announced its inability to reduce the gas prices due to high crude oil prices. Now, crude oil prices have sharply dropped. Now, it is possible for the Government to bring down the local gas prices at least by Rs. 750 a domestic cylinder. Yet, the price has been reduced by a very small margin. This is nothing but deception,” he said.
He said, “The so called price reduction seems to be an election gimmick. We will continue with our agitation against the Government unless it brings down the fuel prices in conformity with the world market prices.”
He said that had the UNP been in power today, diesel would have been priced at Rs. 32 a litre, petrol at Rs. 55 a litre and kerosene oil at Rs. 26 a litre.
