I prefer Canon over Sony, but usually they are bit expensive. Nevertheless Sony is also pretty good, Panasonic Lumix is another good brand. But stay away from other brands like Olympus, Ricoh, Nikon, Samsung etc.. They don’t have good Point and Shoot type cameras below $200.
Image stabilization is a must ! Without that you have to be extremely careful and hold the camera very still when taking photos, especially under low light conditions. Otherwise photos will be blurry. AFAIK Sony Cibershot S series doesn’t have Image stabilization, so I don’t recommend those at all try the W series instead. In Canon cameras, image stabilization is marked by letters IS at the end of the model name (i.e : SD1100 IS).
One more thing, not all cameras of a particular brand (whether it be Sony, Canon or Lumix) are equally good. Some models are bad and some are good. You have to read a review to find out which is better. Two popular sites I normally use are
