Gary Keys' 1986 film capturing Dizzy Gillespie and band live in Redondo Beach, CA. The trumpeter/bandleader is in great form, leading his crack band through classics from various parts of his career. Filmed in Gary Keys signature style, with lots of closeups of the players, capturing all of the impish comedy and good times of the elder statesman of jazz.
Dizzy Gillespie's contributions to jazz were huge. One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time (some would say the best), Gillespie was such a complex player that his contemporaries ended up copying Miles Davis and Fats Navarro instead, and it was not until Jon Faddis' emergence in the 1970s that Dizzy's style was successfully recreated. Somehow, Gillespie could make any "wrong" note fit, and harmonically he was ahead of everyone in the 1940s, including Charlie Parker. Unlike Bird, Dizzy was an enthusiastic teacher who wrote down his musical innovations and was eager to explain them to the next generation, thereby insuring that bebop would eventually become the foundation of jazz.
Dizzy Gillespie was also one of the key founders of Afro-Cuban (or Latin) jazz, adding Chano Pozo's conga to his orchestra in 1947, and utilizing complex poly-rhythms early on. The leader of two of the finest big bands in jazz history, Gillespie differed from many in the bop generation by being a masterful showman who could make his music seem both accessible and fun to the audience. With his puffed-out cheeks, bent trumpet (which occurred by accident in the early '50s when a dancer tripped over his horn), and quick wit, Dizzy was a colorful figure to watch. A natural comedian, Gillespie was also a superb scat singer and occasionally played Latin percussion for the fun of it, but it was his trumpet playing and leadership abilities that made him into a jazz giant.

A talk show with Elvis Costello interviewing other musicians could have been unbearably precious, but Costello is such a formidable songwriter, and so obviously bright and quick, that he keeps his equilibrium even with three of rock?s biggest stars: Bruce Springsteen, and U2?s Bono and The Edge. The highlight of the second season of Spectacle: Elvis Costello with . . . is doubtless the two shows with Springsteen. In the first, Costello reaches back to the songwriter?s first two records, prompting the Boss to remember his early days, when he and his band hustled for work in bars along the Jersey shore. Nils Lofgren and Roy Bittan join Springsteen onstage for "Wild Billy?s Circus Story," a song from his second album, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle.
Costello observes that the E Street Band was closer to a soul than a rock?n?roll band during the group?s early tours in the mid-1970s. Springsteen agrees, then tells Costello how much he learned in small clubs by watching Sam & Dave and other soul singers. He and Costello play a rave-up version of Sam & Dave?s "I Can?t Stand Up for Falling Down," which Costello covered on his own fourth LP, Get Happy!! (1980). When Springsteen and Costello talk about the music that inspired them, it?s clear that they still believe that the best music can give people a great deal of hope.

The Schubert four-hand piano music on this set, comprising just about all of Schubert?s greatest works in the genre, was originally recorded in London in 1978?79, and first released on EMI. The two pianists are a wonderful match in every way, with total unanimity in sound as well as interpretation?not surprising, since Frantz studied with Eschenbach, and both pianists have pursued similar paths as conductors, in addition to their success as concert pianists. Eschenbach?s second career as a conductor is well known in the US. Frantz, whose career is centered in Europe, was inspired by Leonard Bernstein and profoundly affected by the musical and political ideals of his mentor; in 1995, he created the Philharmonia of the Nations?a multinational group of young musicians from over 40 countries?which he conducts everywhere. His dedication to music is evident in his appointment as Special Ambassador to the UN High Commission for Refugees; he is also the founder of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.

Faces (sometimes known as The Faces) are an English rock band formed in 1969 by members of the Small Faces after Steve Marriott left that group to form Humble Pie. The remaining Small Faces - Ronnie Lane (bass guitar), Ian McLagan (keyboards) and Kenney Jones (drums & percussion) - were joined by Ronnie Wood (guitar) and Rod Stewart (lead vocals), both from The Jeff Beck Group, and the new line-up was renamed Faces. Faces released four studio albums and toured regularly until the autumn of 1975, although Stewart simultaneously pursued a solo recording career, and during the band's final year Wood also toured with The Rolling Stones, whom he later joined.
When Warner issued The Best of Faces: Good Boys When They're Asleep in 1999, it was a triumph, the very best single-disc issue of the Faces to date, capturing all of their barroom craziness, tattered elegance, good-time rock & roll hedonism, and droll English wit. In short, it was unbeatable -- until now. Rhino's The Definitive Rock Collection goes one better, actually 11 better on its 30-cut double-disc set. There are more cuts from the early days, such as "Around the Plynth" and "Shake, Shudder," and more middle- and late-period cuts, including two by Rod Stewart & the Faces, "(I Know) I'm Losing You" and "Jodie." Thank goodness they kept Ronnie Lane's sublime "Debris," "Stay with Me," the band's killer rip of Chuck Berry's "Memphis, Tennessee," and "Just Another Honky." Despite the terrible cover art and slipcase, this baby replaces the previous collection in sound and content. Sean Egan's liners work well, too. Add this to the amazing box set Five Guys Walk into a Bar... and you have everything you need.
