    Not Far From U
99.8% of Sri Lankan software engineers are computer virgins. they do AL from mathematics or something, go to a public or private university get a deegree on IT or CS.( but they still dont know how many keys there are in the keyboard) and find a job ( which takes 100 engineers to create a stock control software ).. and die happily.
the other 0.2% guyz become really interested in computers before the above ones... they are the real com guyz. the explore new tecs, post tech blogs, create advance algos, create advance softwares, they do a lot of gr8 work in computer world...

so whats u gonna be.. ?

If u need BScEng in computer u need to go to efac,so u need CM,Phy,Chem
it's not about those so called software engineering but computer engineering,

IF you want to get a computer engineering degree you have to enter to moratuwa or peradeniya eng. faculties.... there you can specialize as a computer engineer.
you need chemistry for university entrance but not for computer science.... Degree you will be getting is a B.Sc (Computer Eng)..... then you can work as a software or hardware engineer
    gud luck

hardware engineering is useless in SL.. besides it need a lot of electronics and maths and shit.. go for it only if u are planning to work for intel , amd , cisco like companies.. ( it is a hard task )

not all are in those so called 0.2% bro. true SOME of the really great guys didn't even had the high school ed. that is true. but there are so many great people who followed the normal routine. no harm following ny way you see fit. but it does not say that is only good path. not all guys who followed your path ended up in success.
Again I have a point. I'm talking about an average student. there may be self studied SW Eng who is smarter than UOM/PERA ENG grad. I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about an avg person. then the place matters. I have seen the difference while working with so many guys from wide rage of places. all can code. so true. but when it come to performance, code quality, proper pattern then the education matters. in most cases person with good education background know how to learn fast.

chemistry and physics are like very basic scientific fields. Engineers from almost all fields will have to deal with some chemistry related things at a certain point. specially if you gonna do hardware, then you will have to deal with some chemistry as well. This might be different from a university to university. First year of most of the engineering degree program will contain some overall engineering study area. which will include not only physics and chemistry, but some material engineering, structural engineering, matlab as well. even though you gonna do electronics. :)

As I see,now everyone is thinking BScIT(Which can be obtained from many places) is Computer Engineering not BScEng,that causes lots of doubts, many think computer engineering is just coding  I started coding when I was a kid,but i never wanted to be a Software engineer as they say,I just wanted to use computer as a tool for other fields.I wonder without chemistry how can computers exits?without BJTs(see how chemistry links with physics ;) )?what about VLSI? :oo:
There is nothing super than other, everything is linked in a certain way, noone can say chemistry is useless, everything is linked in Engineering,See A.I. is mostly Computer engineering, but will it serve well without Electronics,Electrical & Mechanical ?

    True.
it is important to have a good scientific and mathematical background if someone is going to do engineering.

    about the OP:
if someone is going to design something physically existing, they he will have to select materials for the design. will have to compare materials to obtain the best possible efficiency.
if an engineer is going to design an electrical/electronic based product, he will have to select best materials for that. thermal properties, possible thermal stresses during operating conditions, electrical properties would have to be compared.
