Sri Lanka has allowed more antagonistic critics such as Milliband, Kouchner and Des Browne to visit the country. It is not that they are opposed to dialogue. UN officials too have been admitted despite calls for investigations into alleged violations. What possibly went wrong was that Bob Rae and his Liberal colleagues have been seeking intervention in Sri Lanka based on guesstimates of civilian casualties which John Holmes of the UN also rejected as unverified and unreliable, which request by some members of the EU and Canada was turned down by the HR Council of the UN in Geneva.
The Liberals made wild allegations of genocide during the first emergency debate in February and sought a second emergency debate using hollow stats already rejected by the UN to browbeat Sri Lanka with punitive measures after she had succeeded in eliminating a brutal terrorist group and rescuing nearly 285000 displaced civilians being used as a human shield with minimal harm, and securing the right to life of 20 million citizens who were being targeted by these terrorists for 3 decades. The Liberals were echoing the Tamil Tiger propaganda merely to safeguard their votes within the Tamil diaspora, and became hostages of the Tigers just like the IDPs held against their will.

Instead of congratulating Sri Lanka for defeating the maniacal group of Tamil Tiger terrorists, the Liberals pursued a vindictive policy on Sri Lanka. Once Bob and other Liberals wake up to the reality on the ground in Sri Lanka which is striving hard to provide relief, rehabilitate and reconcile the temporarily displaced Tamils, they could certainly visit the country and see the situation for themselves and extend constructive advice and help instead of sticking to their erroneous political script with an eye on the Tamil diaspora votes needed to win 13 ridings in the GTA at the next election
