Sri Lankan Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris has decided to accept US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s invitation for bilateral meetings in Washington DC next month, nearly two months after the senior US official invited her Sri Lankan counterpart for ‘reengagement’ on the issues on the heels of a US backed resolution against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council.
In January this year, Secretary Clinton invited Prof. Peiris to visit Washington in March to discuss Sri Lanka’s plans to “move ahead on reconciliation and accountability issues and the Provincial Council elections in the Northern Province,” in a letter that emphasized that the invitation in no way impeded US plans to go ahead with the UNHRC resolution.
