Monday will see a new dawn in the Facebook worldas it is likely to offer email services to its 500 million users. This will make this largest social networking site, the largest email service provider too competing with Gmail and Yahoo.
TechCrunch, a leading Silicon Valley technology blog, revealed that Facebook plans to announce a web-based email service at an event in San Francisco. It is part of a secret project known as Project Titan unofficially referred to as Gmail killer. It will provide @facebook.com addresses. There are chances of a strategic alliance with Microsoft to incorporate the functionality of Facebook in Office applications.
This would allow Facebook's more than 500 million members to communicate with anyone inside or outside the walls of the social network. Facebook would then jump in leaps and bounds across the millions of users of Windows Live Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and Gmail.
Yahoo, Google and Microsoft are already restructuring their email services to build them more around people's social connections.
Here’s our question: do users really want a @Facebook.com e-mail address? Would they actually use it in conjunction or in place of their current e-mail addresses? Let us know what you think.
