Southern Sri Lanka shaken by earth tremor
Aug 06, 2008 (LBO) - Southern parts of Sri Lanka were shaken by minor tremors, early on Wednesday morning, and investigations are underway to find the cause, an official said.

The tremor was felt in Tangalle, Beliatte, Ranna and Kudawella, in Sri Lanka's southern province by residents, around 5.45 to 5.50 am local time, JNW news said quoting the meteorological department.
O K Dissanayake of Sri Lanka's Geological Survey and Mines Bureau said the tremors were very small and recorded at the Pallekele research station in central Sri Lanka.
He said officials have been sent to make on-site investigations and efforts were underway to find the causes of the tremor.
Dissanayake said the affected area in the Southern province of Sri Lanka was located on limestone, and such rock formations sometimes set off tremors when underground caverns collapsed.
Areas where large reservoirs have been built could also experience such disturbances, he said.
Large quakes usually happen at the edge of tectonic plates which make up the solid crust of the earth, and constantly jostle against each other.
Large earthquakes occur when pent up pressure at plate margins, are released.

Sri Lanka was located on the main Indian plates, but he said several smaller divisions had been noted after the 2004 tsunami, Dissanayake said.
Though the small tremor had been recorded in Pallekele, he said data from three different stations was needed to pin point the place from which the tremor originated.
