ECMO is an acronym for ExtracCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation - mainly used in severe and life-threatening illness that stops their heart or lungs from working properly.
It's used in circumstances where the lungs cannot provide enough oxygen to the body even when given extra oxygen, lungs cannot get rid of carbon dioxide even with help from a mechanical ventilator and the heart cannot pump enough blood to the body.
The ECMO machine pumps blood from the patient’s body to an artificial lung (oxygenator) that adds oxygen to it and removes carbon dioxide. Basically, it replaces the function of the person’s own lungs.

Note that it basically supports the patient but does NOT help to cure the disease. Also there are associated risks with the ECMO procedure , too detailed to write here.

Also note that, even with ECMO, 40% of the Covid patients died.
