    P-51 Mustang

    p51_infl_fields.jpg

The North American P-51 Mustang is a legendary plane, as much as the Spitfire or the Bf-109. No other combat aircraft of the war could go as far and fly as high as the Mustang. No wonder it was used to escort bombers over Germany and clear the skies of Luftwaffe airplanes.

    p-51_cutaway_flip.jpg

    Germany was far, too far for the Allied interceptors that had to go back too early, leaving the bombers to the Luftwaffe aircrafts. In 1944, the introduction window.google_render_ad();
of theP-51 was a huge relief for the crews of Allied bombers. Very fast, with excellent handling and armament, the Mustang outclassed most German and Japanese airplanes, except the Focke-Wulf Fw-190D as a fighter interceptor (with its jet engines, the Messerschmidt 262 was a technical marvel ahead of its time, but still needed to be tested – many of them were shot down by P-51 Mustang pilots). With the B-29 and the F4U Corsair, the P-51 is certainly one of the greatest United States' technical achievements of the Second World War and one of the best piston engine figther aircraft ever designed. It will be remembered as the airplane that allowed the Allied Forces to penetrate deep into Germany skies without being overwhelmed by enemy fighter aircrafts.

    Curtiss P-40 Warhawk

    P40-warhawksformation.jpg

The prototype for the P-40 series was flown in 1938. The P-40 Warhawk was the first single-seat American fighter to be produced on a large scale. At the onset of the hostilities, almost half of the USAAF airplanes were P-40s.
Slower and less manoeuvrable than the majority of the other fighters of its time, the Warhawk, the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk nonetheless was a very tough and dependable aircraft. Also, American pilots just loved the way it looked. Improvements continually made it a better airplane, and it was used throughout the war. Production of all P-40s totalled 16,802 planes.

    B-29 Superfortress

    b29_gr_color_650.jpg

The B-29 Superfortress was the first pressurized bomber to enter service. It also was the heavier aircraft to be built during the Second World War. The prototype of this aircraft flew for the first time on September 21, 1942, and the plane entered service in 1943. Originally designed to reach Germany from the United States, the B-29 became combat ready only when the war in Europe was ending.
Therefore, during WW2, the B-29 was only used against Japan, with many missions targeting Tokyo. On August 6, 1945, the Enola Gay, a B-29 aircraft commanded by colonel Paul Tibbetts, dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Pressurized, faster than the japanese interceptors and capable of cruising at high altitudes, the B-29 was truly a revolutionary airplane.
Before the end of the war, about 4 000 B-29s were built. This military aircraft also played a role during the Korean War, and was used in the nineteen-fifties to bring experimental airplanes to high altitude, having a service ceiling in excess of 40,000 feet.

    Armstrong_whit_infl_crop.jpg

The Armstrong Whitley was the first allied military aircraft to fly over Berlin. Flying at 367 km/h (230 mph), it was a rather slow plane that would become an easy target for German fighters. This may be one of the reasons why it soon would be used as a night bomber. The Armstrong Whitley was also used for anti-submarine warfare, leaflet dropping and agent insertion.
Being the first modern style monoplane heavy bomber of the RAF, the Armstrong Whitley prototype flew in March 1936 and the aircraft actually entered service a year later, in March 1937.

At the outbreak of the war there were 207 Whitleys in service in the RAF.
An Armstrong Whitley achieved the first Coastal Command sinking of a German U-boat in November 1941. The Whitley was retired from all front-line service in late 1942 but it continued to operate as a transport for troops and freight as well as towing gliders.

A total of 1,737 Whitleys were produced.
