In fact the whole town knows it and nobody seems to care. Including their sheriff.- Well of his murder you stay right there and prove it. Now get to work, talk to somebody.- Talk to somebody? You want to come down here and try it. Talk to everybody in town, nobody said a word.- Well stick with it Sam. Prove it's murder.- If I do that'll cause the company an extra 20.000 bucks, it is a double indemnity clause.- So what? When the newspaper finds out, we, the federal insurance company, spend money to pay double indemnity. There was never a hint of anything terrible like this. Now everybody's a murder suspect. Our lives will never be the same. Can you please drop the case?- Don't you understand? It wouldn't make any difference whether I'd dropped it or not. Somehow, someway, someday, somebody else would pick it up and follow it through.- Can't I make you see what you're doing?- I think I do know what I'm doing.- You know our jobs are a lot of like. Just set be a case of two people doing the same job in a different way. I'd like to tell you a story about that if you listen.- Why?- Well, it may help you to see things in a different light. This story is about a case I worked on once. Right in this town, fella was killed under circumstances a lot like the ones in the Phillips case. As a matter of fact, the man was a lot like Phillips. Anyway this a man was a mighty unpleasant individual. I'm putting it mildly when I say he was a blight on the whole community. They lived through a long time. I don't think there was a man, woman, or child in the whole community who wasn't hurt by this man at some time or another. And there was another man lived here too. Just the opposite. He loved the whole town and everybody in it. And he watched this man year after year gradually destroying the lives of everybody he loved, until he couldn't stand it any longer. And one night...
