After you make the selection, do:

go to this menu,
Select > Feather (Keyboard shortcut: Alt + Ctrl + D)

this will apply the feather effect to the selection. Then copy the selection and paste it into a new layer and you'll see the effect.
Mess with it and you'll love it machan.

Here is another way to do it:

Ctrl - click the pasted in layer to select it, then Select - Modify - Border - and enter a small amount.

The exact amount will depend on the image size and the effect you want. I usually zoom in close and experiment with amounts like 2 to 5 and sometimes more.

Next,

Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur, zoom in again to show an edge and experiment with very small amounts that again will depend on the effect you want and the size of the image your working with.

and Goto IMAGE > ADJUST > LEVELS or (ctrl + L). use these setting. try playing around with the setting just to see what it does.
