Elle Gunawansa Thero says you have to be a Buddhist to be a Sinhalese.

Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thero, Incumbent at Dharmayathanaya, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, clearly said this in a television interview 2 years ago, just after the conclusion of the war.

He didn't use the exact words, but his exact words, as I remember was "Api attha kathaa karamu. Ape agamai (referreing to Buddhism) jaathiyai wen karanna behe. E dekama ekak.".

I am wondering whether most Sinhala Buddhist actually feel like this? So what about Sinhala Catholics and Christians? Aren’t they not Sinhalese? If not what do we call them??

I did some research and found out that in Malaysia according to the constitution you have to be Muslim to be considered a Malay. So, we are not the only country who thinks like this. Mind you Malaysians have made it a legal requirement, where in here it is not that strict.

Is it fair/right to say that you have to be a Buddhist to be considered a true Sinhala?
