New oil will help reduce any sludge build up and add a new protecting layer on top of the metal (so you are less likely to have metal on metal contact) Technically you could wait until the oil is ineffective but you are risking major damage by doing it. If you live in a not so dusty area and use a very good air filter and use good quality oil + good quality gas on low mileage engine.... maybe it's alright but you would never know.</blockquote>
