Eating habits and diet of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)
What were the diet and eating habits of the Prophet , and his Companians?

    Praise be to Allaah.
The Prophet’s guidance with regard to food is perfect guidance. It was described by Ibn al-Qayyim as follows:

When he put his hand in the food, he would say, “Bismillaah (in the Name of Allaah), and he told people to say this when eating. He said, “When any one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allaah. If he forgets to mention the name of Allaah at the beginning, let him say Bismillaahi fi awwalihi wa aakhirihi (in the name of Allaah at its beginning and at its end).” Saheeh hadeeth, narrated by al-Tirmidhi (1859) and Abu Dawood (3767).

The correct view is that it is obligatory to mention the name of Allaah (say Bismillaah) when eating. The ahaadeeth which state this are saheeh and are clear, with no contradictions in them.

When he raised the food to his mouth, he would say, “Al-hamdu Lillaahi hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubaarakan fihi ghayri makfiyyin wa laa muwadda’ wa laa mustaghni ‘anhu Rabbanaa ‘azza wa jall (Allaah be praised with an abundant, beautiful, blessed praise. He is the One Who is Sufficient, Who feeds and is never fed, The One Who is longed for, along with that which is with Him, and the One Who is needed. He is Our Lord, may He be glorified). Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5142).
He never criticized food at all. If he liked it, he would eat it, and if he did not like it, he would leave it and not say anything. Narrated by al-Bukhaari (3370) and Muslim (2064).

Or he would say, “I do not feel like eating this.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5076) and Muslim (1946).

Sometimes he would praise the food, as when he asked his family for food, and they said, “We have nothing but vinegar.” He asked for it and started to eat it, saying, “What a good food is vinegar.” Narrated by Muslim (2052)
He used to talk whilst he was eating, as is seen from the report quoted above about vinegar.

And he said to his step-son ‘Umar ibn Abi Salamah when he was eating with him: “Say Bismillaah and eat from that which is in front of you in the dish*.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5061) and Muslim (2022). [* At the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), people used to eat together from one dish, and children would sometimes forget the correct etiquette. - Translator]

He would repeatedly urge his guests to eat, as generous hosts do, and as is seen in the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah, narrated by al-Bukhaari, about the story of drinking milk, where he repeatedly said to him, “Drink!” and he kept telling him to drink until he (the guest) said, “By the One Who sent you with the truth, I have no more room for it!” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (6087).

When he ate with others, he would not leave until he had made du’aa’ for them. He made du’aa in the house of ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Bisr, and said: “O Allaah, bless for them that which You have provided for them, forgive them and have mercy on them.” Narrated by Muslim (2042).

He commanded people to eat with their right hands and forbade them to eat with their left hands. He said, “The Shaytaan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.” Narrated by Muslim (2020). This implies that eating with the left hand is haraam, and this is the correct view, because the one who eats with his left hand is either a shaytaan (a devil), or he is imitating the Shaytaan.
It was also reported in a saheeh hadeeth that he told a man who was eating with his left hand in his presence, “Eat with your right hand!” The man said, “I cannot.” He said, “May you never be able to!” – and the man never lifted his right hand to his mouth after that. Narrated by Muslim (2021). If it was permissible (to eat with the left hand), he would not have prayed against him for doing so. It was the man’s stubborn arrogance that made him refuse to obey the command, and this is the utmost disobedience which deserved this prayer against him.
He commanded those who complained that they never felt full to eat together and not separately, and to mention the name of Allaah (say Bismillaah) over the food so that He might bless it for them.” Narrated by Abu Dawood (3764) and Ibn Maajah (3286).
    (See Zaad al-Ma’aad, 2/397-406)
It was also reported that he said, “I do not eat reclining.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5083.
He used to eat using the first three fingers (of his right hand), which is the best way of eating.

See: Zaad al-Ma’aad, 220-222. And Allaah knows best.
    The Prophet’s guidance regarding diet:
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to know what he was eating.

He used to eat what was good for him.
He used to eat enough to keep him going, but no so much as to make him fat. Ibn ‘Umar narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The believer eats in one stomach whilst the kaafir eats in seven.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5081) and Muslim (2060).

He taught his ummah something to protect them from diseases caused by eating and drinking. He said: “The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (1381), Ibn Maajah (3349); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (2265).
    And Allaah knows best.

Can you give the source, the study details etc.? I haven't heard anything like this in my medical studies.

'Germs are made by dipping fingers inside food bowl'?? You mean fingers and food get together and CREATE germs?? And anyway stomach is too acidic for most bacteria and the only one I've heard to exist in stomach is the helicobacter pylori and it is not 'made' by dipping fingers in food bowls; furthermore, stomach GETS problems because of it.

By licking fingers one can lick germs-that's why modern medical science asks people to wash their hands using soap before eating, to get rid of germs.

Saliva production can be increased by even thinking about food, smelling food and having food inside mouth. If we lick fingers to increase saliva production, so that digestion is made fast, then we will have to do it BEFORE eating, so that saliva will be there in the mouth when the food arrives. If you lick fingers after eating, then the food will already be in the stomach; even if you swallow the saliva you so produced, it would be useless because it's neutralized by the stomach acidity.

    :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Non-Muslims in the world, wake up and take note.

For generations, you have not taken sufficient saliva.

Time is ripe. Hurry up. Take enough saliva.

    Lick your fingers after meals.

    Siraj, Tell us about watalappan.

Is it only a Sri lankan custom to make watalappan for Ramazan?
What's the 'origin' of watalappan? Who made it first?
How do you make watalappan? Are there different recipes?

I am totally ignorant of this subject. So, I inquired from a microbiologist whether any germs are made if you dip your fingers in the food while eating, he said, yes, but only in the case of followers of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Did Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him prescribe camel urine as medicine?
The sections of this article are:
1- The Hadith (narration) by the Prophet.
2- The scientific facts about some animals' urine.
3- Scientists discovered cure from camels for humans.

4- Proofs from the Noble Quran, Hadiths and Science that Camel Urine does have cure in it for humans - written by brother G. F. Haddad.

5- Who were the Tribe of Uraina?
6- What about the Bible's cruelty and the slaughtering of suckling infants?

1- The Hadith (narration) by the Prophet:
First let us look at the Sayings (Hadiths) of our beloved Prophet that dealt with camel urine:
Narrated Abu Qilaba: "Anas said, "Some people of 'Ukl or 'Uraina tribe came to Medina and its climate did not suit them. So the Prophet ordered them to go to the herd of (Milch) camels and to drink their milk and urine (as a medicine). So they went as directed and after they became healthy, they killed the shepherd of the Prophet and drove away all the camels. The news reached the Prophet early in the morning and he sent (men) in their pursuit and they were captured and brought at noon. He then ordered to cut their hands and feet (and it was done), and their eyes were branded with heated pieces of iron, They were put in 'Al-Harra' and when they asked for water, no water was given to them." Abu Qilaba said, "Those people committed theft and murder, became infidels after embracing Islam and fought against Allah and His Apostle . (Sahih Bukhari, Ablutions (Wudu'), Volume 1, Book 4, Number 234)"

Cutting the hands and feet of the enemy in the Bible:
Before we proceed, it is important to know that the Bible's Prophets too did similar punishment (cutting hands and feet of the enemy):
    2 Samuel 4
10 when a man told me, 'Saul is dead,' and thought he was bringing good news, I seized him and put him to death in Ziklag. That was the reward I gave him for his news!
11 How much more-when wicked men have killed an innocent man in his own house and on his own bed-should I not now demand his blood from your hand and rid the earth of you!"
12 So David gave an order to his men, and they killed them. They cut off their hands and feet and hung the bodies by the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-Bosheth and buried it in Abner's tomb at Hebron.

Please visit: Prophet Muhammad is a Murderer for KILLING the enemies? WHAT ABOUT THE BIBLE'S PROPHETS' MURDERS that were blessed by GOD?
Refutation to the preposterous LIES of Jochen Katz about his Bible not containing inhumane murders from its Prophets!

2- The scientific facts about some animals' urine:
A comment from sister Nicole Woods, an American young sister who embraced Islam; may Allah Almighty always be pleased with her: "I just wanted to share the news with you that in products such as tylenol or asparine (not sure which but u can check the labels), there is an ingredient called PREMARIN. Biology majors here tell me that the name stands for PREgnant MARe urIN. Of course, no one would put unprocessed urine into medication... i'm sure it's boiled or pasteurized or something. But the ingredient is used very much in the way the prophet (peace be upon him) suggested using camel urine.. such as for headaches. oh, well, i'm sure to you it sounds disgusting... think of it next time u reach for tylenol or asparine *wink*"

    Further from
a Muslimah, who works in the Medical field as a Mammographer; may Allah Almighty always be pleased with her: "Estrogen product called PREMARIN is given to postmenopausal Women. This PREMARIN is extracted from HORSE URINE. The Estrogen product is hormones given to women."

Further from brother Abu Adam on my Message Board; may Allah Almighty always be pleased with him:
"Here is another miracle in the Hadeeth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a hadeeth told someone to drink camel's urine as a medical treatment.
Of course the ignorant Christians love to mock this hadeeth. Even I, thought this was a strange hadeeth. But look, in America, they have been driking horse urine for a long time as a cure.
Just like the Quran says, 41:53: "Soon will We show them our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things?"
    ======================================================
go to www.premarin.org for the following. (also see premarin.com)
Premarin® stands for Pregnant Mares' Urine (PREgnant MARes' urINe)
Premarin (including Prempro, Premphase, Prempac, and Premelle) is a drug made up of conjugated estrogens obtained from the urine of pregnant mares -- put out in many forms (pills, creams, injections, patches, vaginal rings) and is used to reduce the symptoms of menopause in women or women who have had a hysterectomy. It is also prescribed to nearly eliminate the risk of osteoporosis (the brittling of bones) and reduce the chance of heart disease in women over 50."

Further from brother Abdul Hafiz; may Allah Almighty always be pleased with him.
The Prophet prescribing Camel Urine as medicine:

First of all, let us clarify the reason and story behind the prescription. Some people had become very ill at the time of the prophet, and were suffering from an unknown illness. Their bellies had swollen and they were not in a fit state. Hence, the prophet said to them, that they would find a cure in the milk and urine of a camel and so he sent them out to an area where camels were grazing. These men went to this area and drank the milk and urine. Sure enough, just like the Prophet said, they were cured and became fit and healthy.

However, at the same time, evil thoughts entered their minds and they decided they wanted the camels for themselves. They therefore killed the owner, and made off with the camels. When news of the murder reached the prophet, he sent an envoy to capture the men, and when they were captured and brought before the prophet, capital punishment was meted out to them.
Having read this story, what do we conclude from it? The answering islam team would have us believe that this Hadith means that drinking camel urine is permissible in Islam. This is INCORRECT. The real meaning of this Hadith is that if a person needs to consume an impure and impermissible substance as a cure for an illness, and no other reasonable alternative is available, then it is permissible. In all other circumstances, camel urine is prohibited.
    Wassalaam

Did Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him prescribe camel urine as medicine?

Christian fundamentalist websites are trying to show Islam in bad light by quoting hadiths and showing how un-scientific they are. One of the website says: "A few teachings found in these divinely inspired texts include the medical virtues of camel urine: The prophet ordered them to follow his camels, and drink their milk and urine, so they followed the camels and drank their milk and urine till their bodies became healthy."
t was the first time I heard the hadith, and it really got me thinking. Sure, we all know anti-biotics are made of mold...but camel urine? I decided to research the whole thing and reply to him. I was quite surprised to find that while the Prophet Muhammad had indeed recommended camel urine to these guys, man, people have been drinking their own stuff for ages! Heres my reply, hope I can help some people who are 'drowning' in confusion....I know the feeling....
First lets look at the hadith:

Narrated Abu Qilaba: "Anas said, "Some people of 'Ukl or 'Uraina tribe came to Medina and its climate did not suit them. So the Prophet ordered them to go to the herd of (Milch) camels and to drink their milk and urine (as a medicine). So they went as directed and after they became healthy, they killed the shepherd of the Prophet and drove away all the camels. The news reached the Prophet early in the morning and he sent (men) in their pursuit and they were captured and brought at noon. Abu Qilaba said, "Those people committed theft and murder, became infidels after embracing Islam and fought against Allah and His Apostle . MY REFUTATION: Do you know what’s in your medication? How do you know it’s any better than camel urine? Who would ever think that a drop of human discharge could become a complex living being? Who would have ever thought camel urine MAY cure an illness? I put together this article about ‘urine-therapy’. You will be surprised.
    History of Urine-Therapy

The history of drinking urine for therapeutic purposes dates back at least to the Holy Roman Empire when great urinal troths were erected in the public squares of each city-state for residents to both contribute to, and benefit from. For centuries European Gypsies have known about the curative properties of urine, using cow urine to cure Bright's Disease (several acute and chronic diseases of the kidneys which produce albumin in urine). It has also been reported that the Yogis and Lamas of Tibet reach extended ages by drinking their own urine.
Through the ages there have been literally thousands of champions of this curious practice: In the early 1800s, a book titled One Thousand Notable Things describes the use of urine to cure scurvy, relieve skin itching, cleanse wounds, and many other treatments. An 18th century French dentist praised urine as a valuable mouthwash. In England during the 1860-70s, the drinking of one's own urine was a common cure for jaundice. In more modern times, the Alaskan Eskimos have used urine as an antiseptic to treat wounds.
“For hundreds of years, other cultures have used urine to treat a wide variety of health problems. Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine (from India) routinely use urine as a remedy. Daily doses of 1 to 2 ounces of warm cow’s urine is used to treat cirrhosis of the liver. It is also prescribed as a diuretic, a laxative, and as a treatment for chronic malaria, headaches and fever. Goat’s urine is used for the same type of problems, while ox urine is prescribed to relive jaundice, worms, and diarrhea. Camel urine is used as a stimulant in cardiovascular disease. Human urine, however, still remains the most popular remedy.” Excerpts from Vol. 5, No. 14 August, 1994 Alternatives For the Health Conscious Individual The standard authority for drugs in Europe until the end of the eighteenth century was Lamery's Dictionnaire Universelle des Drogues. One of the late editions, published in 1759, contains a list of remedies under "Homo." It explains: "All parts of man, his excrescences and excrements, contain oil and the sals volatile, combined with phlegm and earth..."
Horse Urine as a Western Cure
The popular estrogen product called PREMARIN is given to postmenopausal women. This PREMARIN is extracted from HORSE URINE. The name stands for PREgnant MARe urIN. Premarin, has become the third most prescribed drug in the world (just behind Tylenol).
    Recent Proof?
Scientists from the United Arab Emirates have proposed using one of the world's hardiest mammals - the camel - in the campaign to fight and eradicate human diseases. A team led by Dr Sabah Jassim from the Zayed Complex for Herbal Research and Traditional Medicine has suggested that camels are highly resistant to many deadly viral diseases and their antibodies could be used for new drugs.
Camels have a unique physiology which allows them to thrive in some of the world's harshest environments. But as well as these advantages, they have immune systems that are so robust, they remain free from many of the viral diseases that affect other mammals, such as foot-and-mouth and rinderpest.

The antibodies that camels carry inside them are structurally much simpler than those of humans, and Dr Sabah Jassim suggests they would be much simpler to replicate artificially than human antibodies. Writing in the British Institute of Biology's magazine, The Biologist, Dr Jassim says the small size of camel antibodies would also allow them to penetrate deep into human tissue and cells that would not be otherwise accessible. - By BBC correspondent David Bamford http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/1702393.stm
A researcher from a teaching hospital in the Sudan presented a study of 30 patients with ascites -- an accumulation of serum in the abdominal cavity that causes distended stomachs -- that found that they responded slightly better to 150 ml of camel urine a day than to a standard medicine, the diuretic frusimide. And a Chinese pharmaceutical company reported that in a clinical study, its urine-derived cancer drug CDA-II cured 61 percent of patients, compared with a 30 percent cure rate for chemotherapy.
Recent News in the Urine/Medical Issue:
In New York City, alternative health guru Gary Null has devoted several segments of his popular radio program on WBAI (99.5 FM, 12 noon, Monday through Friday) to extolling the benefits of the urine cure.
According to Dr. Beatrice Bartnett in her pamphlet, Urine-Therapy: It May Save Your Life: “morning urine is the richest and best urine to drink, partially due to the greater level of hormonal secretion that takes place in the late night hours when the body is totally relaxed and repairing itself.”
While many people are aware that Gandhi drank his urine, few know that leather-clad rocker Jim Morrison began the practice of drinking his urine while on an LSD-induced spiritual quest in the Mojave Desert. One of the more famous modern day cases involves movie star Steve McQueen, who, it is said, in the last stages of cancer, survived solely on a diet of urine and boiled alligator skin prescribed by his Mexican doctors.

An enterprising young company has come up with a way to trap medically powerful proteins from urine. Enzymes of America has designed a special filter that collects important urine proteins, and these filters have been installed in all of the men's urinals in the 10,000 portable outhouses owned by the Porta-John company, a subsidiary of Enzymes of America.
Indian yogis reportedly have been drinking their urine as a cure for more than 5,000 years. More than 600 scientists gathered in Goa, India, for the first World Conference on Auto-Urine Therapy in February 1996. Some proponents in attendance believe human urine can treat everything from baldness to cancer and AIDS. The use of urine as a topical rub and drink not only is common in India, but also in Japan and Germany and a growing number of countries. At least two books, "The Golden Fountain: The Complete Guide to Urine Therapy," by Coen van der Kroon, and "Your Own Perfect Medicine," by Martha Christy, provide more info on “Urine-Therapy”.
The Second World Conference on Urine Therapy, held last month in Gersfeld, Germany. There, in a tiny resort two hours outside Frankfurt, the Nicholses and 250 other health enthusiasts -- several dozen with M.D. after their names -- from more than 40 countries spent four days debating, discussing and charting the future of one of the world's oldest but least respected healing arts.

    Islam’s stance-Conclusion
First of all, let us clarify the reason and story behind the prescription. Some people had become very ill at the time of the prophet, and were suffering from an unknown illness. Their bellies had swollen and they were not in a fit state. Hence, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them, that they would find a cure in the milk and urine of a camel and so he sent them out to an area where camels were grazing fresh herbs. These men went to this area and drank the milk and urine. Sure enough, just like the Prophet said, they were cured and became fit and healthy.
Yet the Prophet had said in another Prophetic saying that body excretions, such as blood, pus, urine, etc, was filthy and prohibited in Islamic law. It is Islamically prohibited for a Muslim to drink their urine. Muslim scholars came to the conclusion that the real meaning of this the Prophets odd prescription is that if a person needs to consume an impure and impermissible substance as a cure for an illness, and no other reasonable alternative is available, then it is permissible

In all other circumstances, camel urine or ANY animal urine is prohibited.
As for human urine, it is forbidden no matter what; the Prophet Muhammad told us that it is simply waste matter, and is filthy and impure (a Muslim can not pray if he has any on his clothes).
