Yes.. The majority are German speakers or rather the Swiss German version of it. Next comes French and Italian. But English is widely spoken and understood. There is no problem for a visitor.
In Norway sometimes the older generation has problems in conversing in English. Yet they are very helpful. Once in a very remote place I asked for a road and the guy took out paper and drew how to take a short cut but couldn't quite explain verbally. (He did a lot of explaining in Norwegian though) I thanked him and moved on but he changed his mind and came behind, flashed lights overtook me and drove in front of us to a tricky junction where you do a loop and exit, then showed me which one to take and he drove back. It was late in the day and he wanted to be sure that we took the correct road.
But their younger generation, very fluent English. On the first day I arrived there I was looking for Butter, there were many varieties but I wanted natural, but salted one. Everything was some sort of smør (that's what they call it) So asked a high school girl, she took me around the supermarket and helped me with everything I needed. She told me English is mandatory in schools now.
