I'm not afraid of Manchester United expectations - Mourinho

    josemourinho-cropped_7e8eu792sium11qigr3gr295k.jpg

Jose Mourinho insisted he can meet the high level of expectations at Old Trafford as the Portuguese manager looks to transform Manchester United back into Premier League champions.

Despite being the Premier League's most successful club, United have struggled to keep pace with their rivals since Alex Ferguson's departure in 2013, finishing fifth last season under former boss Louis van Gaal.

Van Gaal's first campaign in charge resulted in a fourth-place finish, an improvement on the season prior, which saw a David Moyes-led United end 2013-14 in seventh position.

But with three-time Premier League and two-time Champions League-winning manager Mourinho now at the helm, the former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter and Porto boss said he is well equipped to meet the demands in Manchester.

"It is not new in my career," Mourinho said ahead of Sunday's Community Shield showdown against Premier League title holders Leicester City. "Everywhere I've been I've had to cope with that situation.

"It doesn't matter where I am, everyone expects big things. It's nothing new for me, I like to create that expectation. I like the players to feel it."Sometimes during my career I've created some unrealistic targets but by creating these you push the team to unexpected levels.

"To win the Champions League with Porto or Inter is unexpected and a very risky objective target. To win championships in the first season is a little bit of the same but I like that.

"People analyse it as arrogant and so on, that's not a problem for me. The reality is I always feel for players, managers, clubs that this kind of establishment of very difficult targets can only help us."

Moyes hoping to bring Rodwell back to best at Sunderland

    jackrodwell-cropped_1iz8py7mtrcjy1czlf5vt12wjc.jpg

David Moyes is hoping to rebuild Jack Rodwell's career at Sunderland having previously handed him his Premier League debut at the age of 16 during their time together at Everton.

Rodwell would make 85 league appearances for the Merseyside club before he was eventually sold to Manchester City in 2012, but the prodigious youngster failed to live up to the hype and only made 16 league appearances in two years before being sold to relegation battlers Sunderland.

Under Sam Allardyce, Sunderland spectacularly avoided the drop last season before moving on to take on the England job, opening the door for Moyes to make his Premier League return and reunite with Rodwell.

The Scot said life will not be easy for the midfielder under his stewardship but backed the Englishman to return to top form.

"I hope I can help him," Moyes said. "Jack was a boy who was really highly regarded. He looked as if he had the makings of an England regular in central defence or midfield.

"I'm not too sure if the move he made was the right one when he went to Man City, and I think that stalled him. But, more importantly, he was probably stalled by his injuries.

"He had a couple of injuries at the end of his time at Everton as well with his hamstrings and he’s had real problems with them."But Jack knows how I work – I'll probably whip him harder than I will whip the others because I know what he’s capable of and I need to get him right.

"I think that's probably what Jack needs as well. I think he needs to realise: 'Come on now, you've got to really come up to the plate and see if you can do it.' He's a technically gifted player and he needs to really get over the thoughts that his body can't cope. His body can cope because he’s a great athlete."

Voller backs Schweinsteiger to continue at highest level

    bastian-schweinsteiger-cropped_r40e0owxfdwy1tahmz5p1n2ol.jpg

Rudi Voller believes international retirement can help Manchester United misfit Bastian Schweinsteiger continue playing club football at the highest level.Schweinsteiger called time on his Germany career after the world champions' Euro 2016 semi-final exit at the hands of hosts France.

The 32-year-old saw his first season at United interrupted by injury last term and he faces an uncertain future, with new manager Jose Mourinho not including him in first-team preparations for the new campaign.

However, Voller, who gave the former Bayern Munich stalwart his international debut in 2004, believes the midfielder should not be written off just yet."It is a part of every career that you will become more vulnerable to injuries," he told Bild am Sonntag.

"Then the question arises, how you will continue. He has to face this challenge and he will face this challenge."No matter where his future lies, Bastian can play at least another two years at the highest level."

Voller cited Bayern Munich's Philipp Lahm, who stopped playing for Germany after the World Cup 2014 success in Brazil, as an indication of the benefits of focusing on club football late in a player's career.

"It will help him that he no longer plays for the German national team," Voller said.
"At one point it's just too much to handle. It will benefit Bastian, that this additional burden is gone. Philipp Lahm is the best example for that."

Barcelona allow Vermaelen to attend Roma medical

    thomas-vermaelen-cropped_1qa4j52j552pz1ton1az8p8q23.jpg

Barcelona have confirmed that defender Thomas Vermaelen has been given permission to travel to Italy and undergo a medical with Roma.Roma coach Luciano Spalletti on Friday stated that the Serie A club are in advanced talks to sign the 30-year-old Belgium international.

And Barca on Sunday posted a tweet announcing the former Arsenal player was set for a physical examination in the Italian capital.

Vermaelen has struggled for playing time at Camp Nou since leaving the Gunners for a reported €20 million fee in 2014.

A thigh injury meant he was unable to make his Barca debut until the final match of the 2014-15 LaLiga season against Deportivo La Coruna, and he only made 15 starts in all competitions last term.

The arrival of France international Samuel Umtiti from Lyon in the off-season would have been likely to leave Vermaelen further down the pecking order in the battle for first-team places at the back for Luis Enrique's team.

West Ham 2-3 Juventus: Higuain makes Bianconeri bow in narrow win

    gonzalo-higuain-cropped_lzqncliko9u71isx8c4wnkttx.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain made his Juventus debut off the bench in a 3-2 friendly win over West Ham at London Stadium on Sunday.

The Argentina international, signed from Napoli for a fee of €90million, replaced Mario Mandzukic at half-time but struggled to make an impact during a second half interrupted by regular substitutions.

Top scorer in Serie A last season, the former Real Madrid striker appeared short of his physical best, having last played for Argentina during the Copa America Centenario in June.

An Andy Carroll double helped West Ham fight back from 2-0 down after goals from Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic had put Juve in control, and the match appeared to be drifting towards a penalty shootout before Simone Zaza won it late on.

Having survived Enner Valencia hitting the post in the 18th minute, Juve opened the scoring with relative ease less than a minute later. Dani Alves found Mandzukic at the back post and the Croatian nodded the ball down for Dybala to guide a shot into the far corner of the net.

The Turin giants doubled their lead three minutes later, Dybala taking advantage of Winston Reid's slip to return the favour by teeing up Mandzukic for a close-range finish.

West Ham, playing in a black strip commissioned in honour of their forerunner Thames Ironwork FC, responded in the 34th minute, Mark Noble picking out Carroll from the left and the centre-forward powering a header downwards.Gianluigi Buffon got a glove to it but Carroll followed up strongly, bundling the ball and a defender into the back of the net.

The former Newcastle United and Liverpool striker, who will be hopeful of regaining his England place under new manager Sam Allardyce, struck with another header from a free-kick to equalise eight minutes into the second half, Carroll proving too strong for Medhi Benatia.

But Zaza, seeking to forget an embarrassing penalty miss in Italy's Euro 2016 quarter-final shootout loss to Germany, netted the winner from outside the area after getting clear of the West Ham defence in the 86th minute.

    Manchester United announce Pogba medical

    3241552_heroa.jpg

Paul Pogba is set to undergo a medical ahead of completing a world-record move to Manchester United, the club have confirmed.

The 23-year-old has been granted permission by Juventus to seal a £92 million transfer four years after leaving for Italy for a nominal fee, which will eclipse Gareth Bale's £86 million move to Real Madrid in 2013.

Pogba made just seven appearances for United under Sir Alex Ferguson before leaving and is now on the verge of becoming Jose Mourinho's fourth summer signing after Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Confirmation of the medical comes an hour before Mourinho leads United out at Wembley in the Community Shield season curtain-raiser against Premier League champions Leicester City.

Pogba's arrival is expected to mark an end to United's summer business, with Mourinho hinting at the France international's imminent arrival when talking to reporters on Friday.

"We brought Micki [Mkhitaryan] here, we know the quality he has," he said. "We got a super striker [Ibrahimovic] and we are going to get a very good midfield player, so I am happy with the balance of my squad. I'm happy with the effort that the club has, and is still putting in for us."

    Aubameyang: I'm not leaving Dortmund

    aubameyang-cropped_f988je2c9mu1zbfedp4if0tq.jpg

Borussia Dortmund's star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang insists he will definitely not be leaving the club in the remaining weeks of the transfer window.

The Gabon international has regularly spoken of his ambition to play for Real Madrid and has been linked with a move to Premier League side Manchester City.
But Aubameyang, who has scored 80 goals for Dortmund since joining from Saint-Etienne in 2013, wants to focus on challenging Bayern Munich's dominance of the Bundesliga rather than speculation over his future.

"I will definitely stay at BVB and I would like to no longer respond to thisquestion," Aubameyang explained at a press conference."We hope that we can annoy Bayern."

Aubameyang has been key in helping Dortmund new boy Ousmane Dembele adapt to life at the club following his move from Rennes, although the teenage winger still feels he has much to work on.

"He [Aubameyang] is very important for me, we share a room and he translates for me," Dembele said."I have been very well received and I would like to establish myself as an integral part of the team.

"I like to dribble, but I must still improve in many ways."

Mourinho tips Pogba to be United's new Scholes

    paul-pogba-cropped_182t7vajgnevn1pocu9o7g42hw.jpg

Paul Pogba can finally fill the void left by Paul Scholes in Manchester United's midfield, manager Jose Mourinho has said.

United announced on Sunday the France international had travelled to the club's training ground to complete a medical, with his protracted transfer from Juventus finally drawing towards a conclusion.

Reports suggest United, whom Pogba left in 2012 for a compensation fee of £800,000, will break the world transfer record to re-sign Pogba, with the fee predicted to rise to a staggering €120million, depending on bonuses.

But Mourinho believes the 23-year-old boasts a rare combination of qualities possessed by such Premier League greats as Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Scholes, who retired after United's last title triumph in 2013.

"We have number 10s, we don't have what I call a second midfield player, who is strong enough, powerful enough, but has creativity and scores goals," he told BT Sport.

"Lampard, Scholes, Gerrrard - the second player who sometimes scores more than the number 10 but defends like a number six. They're difficult to find. These three unbelievable players represent that."Pogba is set to become Mourinho's fourth United signing, following the arrivals of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Mourinho says his squad have been caught out by the attitude of Ibrahimovic in particular, a player whom he insists is far from the arrogant star some have perceived him to be.

"The other players are surprised," he said. "Not me, because I know him. He's a good guy. He says the words he does for fun. He can go to the kit man and say 'please, give a towel to God', and then laugh, laugh, laugh.
"The image he sells is not him. He's a good guy."

Werder Bremen 2-4 Chelsea: Hazard shines on first pre-season start

    hazard-cropped_cq8djawhmoid1r7q31oqazfj6.jpg

Chelsea ended their pre-season campaign in style, outclassing Werder Bremen to record a 4-2 victory in Germany.Antonio Conte's men were in search of a positive result, with their opening Premier League match against West Ham looming large on August 15.

And goals from Eden Hazard, Ocasr – the Brazilian's third in the space of a week - Diego Costa and Pedro did the job, although ex-Chelsea striker Claudio Pizarro and substitute Lennart Thy did notch for the hosts.

In a match that saw N'Golo Kante make his inaugural start for his new club since joining from Leicester City, Hazard was also named in a Conte starting XI for the first time.

Bremen had already played seven friendly matches going into the game, but any superior match practice was not evident, as the visitors flew out of the blocks.

Hazard was allowed to find the bottom corner for Chelsea with merely seven minutes gone, after being gifted far too much space on the edge of the penalty area by Zlatko Junuzovic.

Two minutes later, Conte's men found themselves two up, with Hazard again playing an important role. The Belgium winger drove down the left before finding Oscar in the box and he played a neat one-two with Diego Costa before stabbing in a low finish. After striking the crossbar early on, Junuzovic atoned for his error by winning a penalty from Nemanja Matic on 32 minutes, with Pizarro slotting home an inch-perfect spot-kick to reduce the deficit.

But just before the break, Costa was slipped in behind enemy lines by Hazard, before keeping his cool to slot a neat finish across goal to restore Chelsea's two-goal cushion.Bremen's Thy made an impact from the bench with a stunning strike from 25 yards on 65 minutes, Thibaut Courtois only able to offer a despairing dive.

Conte took no chances in immediately substituting captain John Terry after a late injury scare caused by a collision, before Pedro ensured it was all smiles again with a stoppage-time strike to seal the win.

Mainz 4-0 Liverpool: Reds humbled on Klopp's return

    klopp-cropped_1wkaezdjw90l11wq1l2fzfoiea.jpg

Jurgen Klopp's return to former club Mainz did not go to plan as his Liverpool side were thumped 4-0.

Daniel Brosinski, Jhon Cordoba, Yunus Malli and Yoshinori Muto got the goals as the Bundesliga outfit ran out deserved winners against the weakened visitors, who made nine changes after playing Barcelona at Wembley a day earlier.A frustrating day also saw Klopp concerned by an ankle knock for Marko Grujic, who picked up his second injury of pre-season in the first half.

Having convincingly beaten Barca 4-0 on Saturday, only Emre Can and Adam Lallana kept their places for Liverpool, but Mainz had themselves played two midweek games, so made four changes from their 2-0 defeat to Novara.

Unsurprisingly, the visitors struggled to find the same rhythm that had undone the Spanish champions, and after Andre Wisdom was penalised for a handball in the area after 15 minutes, Brosinski coolly rolled the spot-kick into the net.

In the clubs' previous meeting, 10 years earlier, Mainz, then managed by Klopp, had humiliated Rafael Benitez's FA Cup winners 5-0, and the pattern of play here quickly suggested a repeat was not out of the question.Sure enough, shortly before the break, Liverpool were hit by a double blow as Grujic hobbled off before Cordoba lashed in a second at the near post.

With the Premier League side increasingly careless in possession, they fell further behind in the second period when substitute Malli carried the ball forward to thump past Alex Manninger.

Mainz were not finished there, either, with Klopp wearing a bemused smile as Muto beat his statuesque defence to a cross and nodded in for a fourth. With a late Danny Ings consolation disallowed, Klopp's men must now look ahead to their Premier League opener at Arsenal next weekend.

:love:Leicester 1-2 Manchester United: Zlatan header wins Community Shield for Red Devils

    hd-zlatan-ibrahimovic-manchester-united-07082016_2dbu0ye9jn561mjav7k3yyh8r.jpg

A late goal from debutant Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave Manchester United a 2-1 win over Leicester City in Sunday's Community Shield clash at Wembley.

Jesse Lingard put Jose Mourinho's side ahead in the first half with a brilliant solo goal, becoming the first United player since Eric Cantona in 1996 to follow up an FA Cup final strike with a Community Shield goal.

United enjoyed plenty of possession without causing too many further worries for Leicester, and the Premier League champions snatched an equaliser when Jamie Vardy pounced on Marouane Fellaini's error shortly after half-time.

Ibrahimovic, who arrived on a free transfer amid much fanfare following the end of his Paris Saint-Germain contract, had struggled to make a telling impact on his first competitive start for the club, but was denied a winning goal by Danny Drinkwater's goal-line clearance, before Leicester substitute Ahmed Musa nodded over the bar from just six yards out.

But the former Sweden captain made his mark with seven minutes to play, steering a header beyond Kasper Schmeichel's reach to secure a 21st Community Shield triumph for his side and a first piece of silverware for Mourinho as United manager.

Wayne Rooney was on the receiving end of a smattering of boos by the Leicester fans early on, but it was England's captain who had the first effort on target, heading straight at Schmeichel from near the edge of the area following Luke Shaw's deflected cross.

United controlled possession in the early stages, with Leicester content to sit deep and look to spring the counter-attack, but Shinji Okazaki came inches from giving the champions the lead as he glanced a header onto the crossbar from Marc Albrighton's corner.Leicester began to creep more and more into the game but, with 32 minutes played, Lingard lit up Wembley once more with a stunning opening goal.

After collecting the ball close to the halfway line, Lingard skipped beyond challenges from Drinkwater, Robert Huth and Wes Morgan before slotting low past Schmeichel from 12 yards out.

United had looked comfortable with their lead, but they gifted Leicester an equaliser just seven minutes after half-time as Vardy pounced on an error by Fellaini.

After intercepting Musa's pass, the Belgian prodded the ball back towards goal and into the path of Vardy, who rounded David de Gea before slotting home with Leicester's first shot on target.

United were dealt a further blow when Lingard had to be taken off after being caught on the foot by Huth's lunging challenge, though Rooney called Schmeichel into action again just moments after a minute's applause rang out in recognition of England's1966 World Cup-winning team.

The tempo of the game dropped as both managers made use of their six permitted substitutions, but Ibrahimovic almost prodded United back in front after a spell of sustained pressure, with Drinkwater hooking clear from in front of his own goal after the Swede stabbed the ball past Schmeichel.

Musa steered a header up and over De Gea's crossbar from the edge of the six-yard box, and Ibrahimovic made the champions pay for that miss, rising above Morgan to head Antonio Valencia's cross in off Schmeichel's left-hand post to hand United the trophy.

Arsenal 3-2 Manchester City: Sanchez stars as Gabriel suffers injury

    clichysanchez-cropped_1j79pa4zliqfm1xy6tbqnjd7ei.jpg

Alexis Sanchez starred for Arsenal in a deserved win 3-2 over Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in Gothenburg, but Arsene Wenger's defensive injury crisis worsened.

As both teams concluded their pre-season schedules, the game looked set for penalties at 1-1 until the former Barcelona star set away Theo Walcott to beat Joe Hart with a neat finish.

Chuba Akpom put Arsenal further ahead, but a late Kelechi Iheanacho header cut the gap before Gabriel was injured in a challenge with the City striker in the final seconds.

Arsenal are already without centre-back Per Mertesacker for their Premier League opener with Liverpool, while Laurent Koscielny has not played in pre-season following his post-Euro 2016 break.

Sergio Aguero punished Arsenal after Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Francis Coquelin had all wasted early chances by poking home the opener on the half-hour mark.Arsenal had to wait until the 50th minute to level as Alex Iwobi curled beyond Hart from the edge of the area.

Sanchez struck the crossbar with a marvellous free-kick 10 minutes later but, after Walcott and Jesus Navas had been thwarted by Hart and Petr Cech respectively, Arsenal completed the turnaround.

The influential Sanchez slipped in Walcott, who made no mistake with a delicate dink before Akpom profited from sloppy City play at the back to double the lead.
Iheanacho provided hope of a City fightback, but the sting in the tail for Arsenal came courtesy of his tackle with Gabriel that left the latter requiring lengthy treatment with what Wenger later confirmed was an ankle injury.

:cool:This is only the beginning - Zlatan fires warning after Community Shield winner

    ibrahimovic-cropped_gh9aeh6st3551w7nk5nygq7ce.jpg

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes there is something big going on at the club after netting the winner in the Community Shield against Leicester City on Sunday.

Ibrahimovic made the decisive impact on his competitive debut for United seven minutes from time at Wembley with a looping header from Antonio Valencia's cross to seal a 2-1 victory for Jose Mourinho's men.

Earlier Jesse Lingard had opened the scoring for United with a brilliant solo goal, only for Jamie Vardy to cancel out that effort for the reigning Premier League champions.

But Leicester could not respond to Ibrahmiovic's goal as the Swede sealed his first piece of silverware as a United player after winning 12 trophies in four years at Paris Saint-Germain.

"There's something big going on with our team, we're only at the beginning but it is a good start," Ibrahimovic explained after the game.

"It feels good. First official game, we played for the trophy and we won. That's what it is all about - it is the 31st trophy I've won.

"It is why I came here, and hopefully there will be more. We played against a good team, you can see they are very strong and a collective."I feel very good, it's a fantastic team, with good spirit, and everybody knows the coach. He does everything to win.

"It is probably the biggest club that I have ever played in, the only one that compares is Milan."

Lingard: Mourinho makes us feel free at United

    jesse-lingard-cropped_f6x3lz72wfol16a76w6imx1vu.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard claims the players "feel free" under new manager Jose Mourinho.

The 23-year-old scored a sublime solo goal as United claimed a 2-1 win over Leicester City in Sunday's Community Shield clash at Wembley, in which Zlatan Ibrahimovic's late header secured a first trophy for Mourinho since he took over at Old Trafford in May.

Lingard enjoyed a promising season under Louis van Gaal in 2015-16 and scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final - a match which proved to be the Dutch manager's last in charge of the club.

Van Gaal was often criticised for encouraging a more prosaic style during his two-year United spell, and Lingard admits that the attacking players have already begun to feel liberated since Mourinho stepped into the role.

"He's [Mourinho] given the front four licence to mix up positions and it makes you feel free," Lingard told BT Sport. "He's a great manager and he's won a lot over the years. But the main thing is he makes you feel free."

Lingard was delighted to start the season with silverware and a win over the Premier League champions, who equalised early in the second half through striker Jamie Vardy.

"Both teams played really well, we kept the ball really well, they created chances as well. It's a massive plus for us," said Lingard."Playing at Wembley is massive but obviously scoring is a massive as well."

Lingard was substituted after being caught by Robert Huth and he was seen applying an ice pack to his foot in the United dugout, but he is confident he will be fit for his side's league opener away to Bournemouth next Sunday."It's just my foot, it's not too bad," he added. "I should be okay for the next game."
