Middlesbrough 1-1 Stoke City: Shaqiri stunner earns draw after Negredo opener

    xherdan-shaqiri-premier-league-middlesbrough-v-stoke-city-13081_1an2x1ayrh0841s6qo63ctarlq.jpg

A delightful Xherdan Shaqiri free-kick secured Stoke City a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough on Saturday, denying the promoted side all three points after ending their seven-year Premier League exile.

New signing Alvaro Negredo had initially given Boro an early lead, taking just 11 minutes to make his mark after two years away from English football, but a moment of genius from Shaqiri ultimately levelled things up in the second half.Stoke were lucky not to find themselves 2-0 down at the break, though, as Gaston Ramirez hammered against the post shortly before the break.

The visitors failed to produce much of a response but did eventually grow into proceedings in the second half and drew level with 23 minutes left – Shaqiri finding the net with a fine finish from a free-kick.

Boro continued to fight back in search of a late winner but both sides cancelled each other out in the end, with the promoted hosts given a timely reminder of the concentration and quality on show in the Premier League.

Aitor Karanka gave full debuts to five of his nine new arrivals from the start and his team showed no signs of struggling to gel, attacking Stoke with great ferocity in the early exchanges.

And the most high-profile of those new additions made a telling impact 11 minutes in, as Negredo bundled in from close range after Ramirez – another close-season acquisition – nodded Albert Adomah's cross into the danger zone.

Boro lost some momentum when a suspected hamstring injury for Marten de Roon ruined the Dutchman's Premier League bow after just 20 minutes, but Stoke failed to capitalise.

The hosts found their feet again after the half-hour mark and went agonisingly close to doubling their lead in the 36th minute, only for Ramirez's low drive to clip the right-hand post following a driving run into the area.

Boro began to sit back a little more after the break, but they still remained a potent threat on the break.

Albert Adomah initially did brilliantly on the right in the 58th minute, skipping past Erik Pieters on the counter and bursting into the final third, but he inexplicably failed to pick out Negredo in the centre.

And Stoke made the most of that let-off in the 67th minute, as Shaqiri sent a fierce 25-yard free-kick across goal and into the bottom-right corner to equalise in style.
Both sides poured plenty of men forward during the latter stages as they eyed respective winners, but the frequent long balls did not cause great difficulty for either goalkeeper.

There did prove to be one final chance and it fell to Stewart Downing at the back post following a fine Adomah cross, but the winger headed straight into the arms of Shay Given and Stoke held on for a point.

Manchester City 2-1 Sunderland: McNair own goal gives Guardiola winning start

    pep-guardiola-premier-league-man-city-v-sunderland-13081_12veezu8rvnjc13n3wxp5ywzdn.jpg

Manchester City gave new manager Pep Guardiola a winning start to his Premier League career with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium.

Jermain Defoe cancelled out an early Sergio Aguero penalty, but David Moyes' side were denied a share of the spoils as debutant Paddy McNair turned into his own net with just three minutes to play.

Guardiola, in his first competitive match in charge, had just four minutes to wait for the opening goal, as Aguero converted a penalty following Patrick van Aanholt's rash challenge on Raheem Sterling.

City, who handed debuts to Nolito and John Stones, enjoyed close to 75 per cent possession in the first half but were unable to capitalise on their dominance, and only a smart save from Willy Caballero - starting ahead of Joe Hart - denied Defoe an equaliser four minutes before the break.

David Moyes endured a 4-1 defeat as Manchester United manager on his last visit to the Etihad Stadium, but his disciplined side kept City frustrated for long spells in the second half despite seeing so little of the ball.

Moyes was given cause to celebrate as Defoe converted Jack Rodwell's pass 19 minutes from time, but substitute McNair's unfortunate own goal gave City all three points in front of a relieved home crowd.Duncan Watmore headed over a promising early chance for the visitors, but City needed just four minutes to take the lead.

Van Aanholt's clumsy tackle brought down Sterling in the area, and Aguero made no mistake from 12 yards, tucking the ball into the bottom-left corner.

Caballero gave Sunderland the chance of a swift response as he gifted them possession with a poor kick, but debutant Lynden Gooch's low cross evaded Fabio Borini and City were able to clear.

Nolito and Kevin de Bruyne both saw efforts from the edge of the area fly narrowly wide, but Sunderland almost snatched an equaliser before half-time, with Caballero blocking Defoe's prodded effort from close range.

City's dominance of the ball continued after the break, though they had little by way of clear-cut chances until the hour mark, when Aguero dragged the ball wide of the near post after Sunderland failed to clear Sterling's low cross from the left.

Moyes handed Adnan Januzaj his debut off the bench as Sunderland sought an equaliser, and the Manchester United loanee played a part as Defoe snatched the leveller after 71 minutes.

Januzaj and Borini combined before releasing Rodwell, who slipped a clever reverse pass beyond centre-back Aleksandar Kolarov and into the path of Defoe, who finished low past Caballero from 12 yards.

City pushed on in the closing stages and forced the winning goal with 87 minutes played, as McNair, four minutes after coming on, headed into the net from point-blank range after Jesus Navas' cross skidded across goal.

Hull City become first promoted side to beat Premier League winners

    3578482_heroa.jpg

Hull City made history in their 2-1 victory over Leicester City on Saturday, when they became the first newly-promoted outfit to defeat the Premier League winners on the opening day of the season.

Adama Diomande and Robert Snodgrass struck either side of half time as Mike Phelan’s men stunned the 2015-16 English champions.

Leicester are the first reigning top-flight champions to lose their opening game of the following league season since Arsenal in the 1989-90 season, when the Gunners were crushed 4-1 by Manchester United.

Saturday's clash at KCOM Stadium was the eighth occasion that a newly-promoted side had played the reigning champions on the opening matchday of a Premier League season.Nevertheless, Hull hold the recognition of being the first promoted side that won.

Negredo's confidence key to Middlesborough's season - Karanka

    negredo-cropped_35yh9poqujy21fjprgx2o0zil.jpg

Aitor Karanka believes Alvaro Negredo will be crucial to his Middlesbrough's survival this term if he can regain his confidence after a disappointing spell with Valencia.

The former Manchester City striker arrived on loan during the close-season after scoring just 10 La Liga goals in two years, but he got off to a flyer against Stoke City at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday.

Negredo took 11 minutes to find the net, bundling home from close range, and he caught the eye with some fine hold-up play and a few flashes of technical brilliance.
In the end, Xherdan Shaqiri secured Stoke a point with a brilliant free-kick, but Karanka saw enough from his side to remain optimistic and was keen to highlight Negredo's importance."I said when we signed him that he needs to recover confidence because he did not have a great season last season," he told Sky Sports. "He just needs to work on confidence. He was confident today.

"The team knows how important he is to the team and he knows how important he is. He knows how important the team is to him, too. He did well and it was a good game for us."Maybe I'm wrong, but we had seven or eight players playing in their first games at home here. They showed a lot and I'm really confident for the future of this team and for this season."

Boro appeared to show signs of nerves in the second half and Stoke took full advantage through Shaqiri, but Karanka was unperturbed."It was a really good game for us," he added. "Everyone in Middlesbrough has been waiting for this since we got promoted in May.

"Unfortunately we couldn't win the game, but one point and the performance was really good, so it was good. The attitude, how we played as a team; I am happy."

Moyes frustrated as Sunderland fail to hang on at Manchester CIty

    david-moyes-premier-league-man-city-v-sunderland_154b4923oy5hs105tl7ecoagnf.jpg

David Moyes lamented Sunderland's inability to hang on for a point as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

The visitors appeared set to spoil Pep Guardiola's much-hyped bow in the City dug-out when Jermain Defoe cancelled out Sergio Aguero's early penalty, but Sunderland were guilty of sitting too deep and were punished when Paddy McNair turned Jesus Navas' low cross into his own net with three minutes to go.

Moyes, himself in charge of the Black Cats for the first time in a competitive fixture in their Premier League opener, told BT Sport: "I didn't think we deserved it. We can't deny City were the better side but we did everything to make it difficult for them and for long periods we did a great job.

"When we got back to one each it was disappointing, we gave away a bad goal. We backed off Navas and allowed the ball to go across the six-yard box.We should have stopped that but didn't. I can't be critical though because the players did a great job."

Moyes was less understanding with referee Bobby Madley, who failed to spot Willy Caballero tip over Duncan Watmore's early header. Madley wrongly awarded a goal kick and less than a minute later Patrick van Aanholt brought down Raheem Sterling inside the area.

"I hope you've all seen the goalkeeper tipping it over at the other end?" he asked. "From our point of view, those small things [matter] as they scored 30 seconds later."We should have done better but you need some of those things to go for you. It was a mistake, nothing else."

Sunderland's pre-season has been seriously disrupted by the Football Association's protracted pursuit and eventual appointment as England boss of Sam Allardyce, the man who led the Wearsiders to Premier League survival last term. And Moyes, who brought in Manchester United trio McNair, Donald Love and Adnan Januzaj during the week, admitted there was still much work to do.

"We are not ready yet and won't be for a while," he said. "I want them to build on what they did last season and do better than that but that can't be done in two weeks.

"We are short in several areas, we'll do everything we can to improve the team.
"I though Love did a great job and [Premier League debutant] Lynden Gooch did a great job as well off the left. If these young boys do well we are happy to promote them."

Ranieri: Leicester were divided in Hull loss

    claudio-ranieri-cropped_1th2na9l6gvrw1qfy6z5uq2feq.jpg

Claudio Ranieri blamed Leicester City's 2-1 loss to Hull City in the start of their Premier League title defence on a lack of unity.

Riyad Mahrez gave the English champions hope when he cancelled out Adama Diomande's opener on Saturday. But Robert Snodgrass netted the winner to send the Foxes back home empty handed.

"Hull played better," Ranieri told Sky Sports. "We tried to do our best. We tried to win, but sometimes it's impossible. We made some mistakes and we have to think where we made them.

"Our effort was amazing, but it was as individuals, not as a team. I told my players this season will be harder than last season."For this reason I told them we must be very strong together because last season we showed ourselves as a very good team and we need to repeat that. Today we played individually.

"Today was a normal match, maybe a draw was normal but we lost it."Leicester will be looking to get back on track at home against Arsenal next week.

Inter 2-0 Celtic: Eder and Candreva earn De Boer winning start

    frank-de-boer-ajax-eredivisie-20160508_57rciljqb76l1hrarm2ljykdy.jpg

Frank de Boer got off to a winning start in the Inter dugout thanks to Eder and Antonio Candreva's strikes in a 2-0 International Champions Cup win over Celtic on Saturday.

The former Ajax coach was installed at the helm of the Nerazzurri this month after Roberto Mancini walked away from the job, and had to wait until the clash with Brendan Rodgers' men to make his debut.

It proved a fruitful outing for Inter despite Celtic enjoying their fair share of the game, as Eder put the Serie A title contenders in front on the stroke of half-time from a well-worked corner move.

Inter were able to count on summer arrival Candreva - on for the final half hour of the game - to wrap up the win with a sublime chip over Leonardo Fasan, after being put through by captain Mauro Icardi on the counter.

Poor play in midfield from Celtic almost gifted Inter an opening goal in only the third minute, but Ever Banega was brilliantly denied by Fasan from 20 yards after collecting Ivan Perisic's cut-back.

The significantly under-strength Celtic side managed to ease the pressure being exerted by Inter during the opening 20 minutes and eventually crafted a great chance with half an hour played - Stuart Armstrong forcing Samir Handanovic into a fine save after a clever one-two with Nadir Ciftci.

Inter generally looked the more likely to make a breakthrough, though, and eventually broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time - Eder nodding in from close range.

Inter remained in the ascendancy after the break, but Celtic nearly drew level in the 59th minute, only for the crossbar to deny Ciftci, whose fine 25-yard volley had Handanovic beaten.

The Italian side wrapped things up with 19 minutes to go, though, as Candreva latched on to Icardi's throughball and lobbed Fasan with a sublime chip on the edge of the area.

Juventus 2-2 Espanyol: Dybala brilliance seals draw on Higuain's first start

    paulo-dybala-juventus-v-espanyo_1vas03lfgomuw1t4im4oa3vt4w.jpg

Juventus were denied a fourth pre-season win in a row as they were held 2-2 by Espanyol on Saturday.

The Serie A champions, who handed a first start to €90 million signing Gonzalo Higuain, rescued a draw in the closing minutes through a brilliant Paulo Dybala strike after Gerard Moreno looked to have given the 10-man La Liga side the victory.

Espanyol had earlier taken the lead 10 minutes before half-time, as Baptistao turned inside Andrea Barzagli before slotting a clever finish past Gianluigi Buffon, with Mario Mandzukic equalising nine mintues after the restart for Juve.

Massimiliano Allegri named a strong starting line-up but his side struggled to find their rhythm against a side who had gone unbeaten in pre-season prior to Saturday's contest in Mondena.

The first half ended on a sour note, however, when a nasty clash of heads between Pablo Piatti and Hernan Perez forced the latter to be replaced by Jose Manuel Jurado after lengthy treatment on the pitch.

Dybala twice came close to an equaliser just after half-time, forcing Roberto into a good save before just failing to collect a high ball in behind the Espanyol defence. Mandzukic rattled the post with a header as Juve began to step up their search for a goal, but the Croatian made no mistake just four minutes later.Kwadwo Asamoah raced onto Dybala's clever flighted pass, before turning a low cross back into the six-yard area, where Mandzukic was on hand to bundle home.

Quique Sanchez Flores' side were forced to play the final 13 minutes with 10 men after Victor Sanchez picked up a second yellow card, but they struck on the break with three minutes to play to regain the lead.Substitute goalkeeper Neto made a brilliant save to deny Jurado's half-volley, but Moreno was on hand to tap into the unguarded net.

Juve were facing their first pre-season defeat since a penalty shootout loss to Melbourne Victory last month, but Dybala rescued the draw with a sublime left-footed shot from 20 yards that nestled into the top-right corner.

Pjanic will become one of the world's best, declares Allegri

    miralem-pjanic-juventus-v-tottenham-international-champions-cup-26072016_rtskapzetgh11uhtrvp4vi7tr.jpg

Juventus' Miralem Pjanic has the potential to become one of the world's best deep-lying playmakers, according to coach Massimiliano Allegri. The Bosnia-Herzegovina international joined Juve in the close-season for a reported €38 million fee after spending five years at Roma, used predominantly as an attacking midfielder.

However, since joining Juve, the talented midfielder has been used in a deeper role by Allegri, who continues to look for an heir to Andrea Pirlo following his departure in 2015.And Allegri believes that Pjanic will eventually become a world star in that position.

"He [Pjanic] seems like Hernanes, who last year had never played in front of the defence and now looks like a totally different player," he told Sky Sport Italia.
"I think Pjanic will become one of the best in the world in that position."

The major talking point from Juve's close-season has been the world-record sale of Paul Pogba to Manchester United and Allegri now has the task of replacing the Frenchman.Numerous players have been linked, but Allegri is looking for someone technical and with the right mentality.

He added: "The important thing is that the player is talented, technically gifted and has the character to play for Juventus. The market closes on August 31 and the club has done very well so far."We don't need a new striker, as there would be no point signing someone inferior to the level we already have."

Toure and Nasri have Manchester City future, says Guardiola

    yaya-toure-cropped_ca25aqms21u31shcryg8zfojq.jpg

Pep Guardiola says Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri still have a future at Manchester City, despite the duo sitting out Saturday's 2-1 win over Sunderland.

The midfield duo were left out of Guardiola's squad for his first Premier League match, along with striker Wilfried Bony and centre-back Eliaquim Mangala.

The future of all four players has been the subject of recent speculation, with 33-year-old Toure heavily linked with a move to Inter for much of the transfer window, while Nasri was criticised for his fitness upon returning to pre-season training.

But Guardiola is happy with the attitude of the players and says their future inclusion in the side is not out of the question, although he would not guarantee a return for anyone."I don't have any complaints about these names," he told reporters after the match. "Yaya trained really well. Sammy [Nasri] arrived a little bit. "But in the last week, two weeks, he has been training amazingly. So I am really impressed with the quality of Sammy.

"Mangala, you know better than me how professional he is. But in the end I have a squad and I decide, I have to create a team spirit. It's not about tactics, it's not about anything."And just because I decided on this line-up today, that does not mean in the future they are not going to play or they are going to play.

"At Barcelona and Bayern Munich I wanted to change the line-up because I always wanted to involve, I want to create something where everyone is involved. Today I chose this line-up but that doesn't mean they won't play in the future."Guardiola, who handed Willy Caballero a starting spot in goal ahead of Joe Hart, said the Argentine earned his place with his pre-season form but would not give any assurances over the position.

City looked likely to be held to a 1-1 draw by Sunderland after Jermain Defoe equalised in the second half following Sergio Aguero's early penalty, but the home side snatched victory when Paddy McNair turned into his own net with three minutes to play. But, with champions Leicester City losing to Hull City and Tottenham being held by Everton, Guardiola was happy enough to take an unconvincing win.

"For the first game at home it was going to be a question about the Premier League - you saw the results of the other games," he added."I'm very pleased about the performance we achieved. Maybe we should attack quicker but that is normal. We have to learn. I saw many good things about the spirit of the team.

"We didn't create many chances but we only conceded two - the goal and Defoe in the first half, when Willy made a good save."But I am so pleased. We have to build something from that."

Leicester legend Lineker keeps Match of the Day pants promise

    gary-lineker-cropped_db0tpvzyt50u11jjs4aqowuwt.jpg

Premier League fans were treated to a famous spectacle on the opening day of the 2016-17 season as former Leicester City and England star Gary Lineker kept his promise to appear on live television in his underwear.

The 55-year-old, who hosts highlights programme Match of the Day on the BBC, pledged last December that he would appear on the first show "in just my undies" if Leicester won the title.Claudio Ranieri's side went on to seal an astonishing league triumph by 10 points, and Lineker, true to his word, hosted Saturday's show in nothing but a pair of white club-branded boxer shorts.

Some viewers were quick to point out that the decision to wear shorts did not quite fulfil the promise, though others praised both Lineker and the broadcaster for sticking to their guns.

"It is a one off and a sporting miracle that has landed me in my underwear,"said Lineker, who scored 95 goals in 194 appearances for Leicester."When I tweeted that silly bet back in December, I categorically knew there was zero chance of Leicester winning the league. Zero chance. It happened but it was magical, it was great."

Leicester's title defence began on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat to Hull City.

Pogba could prove to be a bargain for Manchester United, says Neville

    paul-pogba_1qx5k90t5rpu311mk758viuujy.jpg

Manchester United’s record signing Paul Pogba has the potential to make his massive price tag look cheap, according to the club’s former defender Gary Neville.

Jose Mourinho’s side smashed the transfer record to bring the France international back to Old Trafford on a five-year deal for a fee worth an initial £89.5m.
However, Neville is not surprised to see the Red Devils splash out on the midfielder and says he has the potential to more than live up to his price tag.

“Manchester United have always broken transfer records for players who are of a certain age, just below their peak. Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney spring to mind,” said Neville, according to the Sunday People.

“But they are getting back to that blueprint with Pogba. He is two or three years short of his peak, but he is a profile signing the club would normally make.

“Now, to expect him to be like Bryan Robson or Keane would be placing far too much expectation upon him. But if Pogba gets anywhere near those levels – those of Robson and Keane – in five or six years’ time, he will be looked upon as cheap.

“That’s just how Ferdinand and Rooney are considered. Look at Rio. At the time everyone went, ‘£30m for a centre-back... wow!’”

Pogba will miss United’s opening game of the season against Bournemouth due to suspension but Neville admits there will be huge expectation on his shoulders when he does get going in red.“For £89m, Pogba will be expected to win big games. He has to grab games by the scruff of the neck and win big games of football,” he added.

“At Manchester United, you have to win your team big matches. So, Manchester City at home on September 10 [will be], ‘Paul, go and win us the match’. Because that’s what Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and David Silva have all been doing for City.

“That’s not me demanding him to do it. But those are the types of games that he has to influence.”

Guardiola keen to avoid Hart questions but hints at return for ousted goalkeeper

    willy-caballero-and-joe-hart-premier-league-man-city-v-sunderland_avxyt5oanz561nol5fhazuo2u.jpg

Pep Guardiola was keen to avoid discussing his decision to drop Joe Hart for his first game as Manchester City manager, but did offer the goalkeeper hope that he can win back his place from Willy Caballero.

Hart's place as City No.1 came under threat back in April when the club's interest in Barcelona's Marc Andre Ter Stegen first came to light, and it is understood there is still an intention to bring in a new signing capable of nailing down a place between the posts.

The decision to use Caballero rather than Hart on Saturday, however, was taken badly by a number of City fans who believe that the Argentine keeper is not noticeably better than the England international with the ball at his feet.

But Guardiola, speaking in his post-match press conference, explained why he plumped for Caballero, even though he was asked directly why Hart was not called upon.

"I think Willy made a very good pre-season, really really good," he said, clearly in little mood to discuss Hart's personal situation. "He gave me for today a lot of confidence, with his build-up play, his personality, and that's why I chose him."

The Catalan was determined not be lured into discussing whether Hart will make his way back into the line-up in the future, least of all for next week's Champions League play-off against Steaua Bucharest.

"Of course he can play," he replied. But when asked if he will definitely start, Guardiola responded: "No. He can play. If he will I don't know. All the players in the squad can play.

"Normally when we have a game I am just focused on this game. I have never seen one game by Steaua. Until now it's Sunderland, Sunderland, Sunderland and what we have to do. Now, tomorrow morning I'm going to start to see and decide what is best for the team. That's all."The new City boss did open up slightly, however, when it was put to him that he used to rotate his goalkeepers during his time at Barcelona.

"Yes at Barcelona it was like this and in Bayern Munich it was not like this," he interjected, midway through the question. "It was always Manuel Neuer playing. I didn't think about that."

On Friday, Guardiola admitted that Hart was not yet up to scratch, but suggested that with time he may be able to adapt his game.

The suspicion, however, is that Hart does not have sufficient time to work his way into Guardiola's plans, even if the manager once again hinted that it could be a matter of time before he returns."Today I needed it because I thought Sunderland would play high pressing, and Willy had more training sessions than Joe about our build-up," he continued.

"We spent a lot, a lot of time working two-against-one, three-against-two, four-against-three, using the goalkeeper, but it doesn't mean that Joe cannot do that. No. I'm not talking about that. Just today, I decide for that reason.

"I have a lot of respect for Joe, I have a lot of respect for his career, I know how good a goalkeeper he is, but today I decide for Willy, that's all."

Jose Mourinho has placed his faith in Memphis Depay ahead of the new Premier League season and stated he intends to keep him at Manchester United.

The Netherlands winger had been one of last season's most underwhelming performers at Old Trafford, as Louis van Gaal's side failed to qualify for the Champions League.Memphis was expected to be offloaded this summer, but Mourinho surprised onlookers by opting to keep him and instead send Adnan Januzaj out on loan.

And now the Portuguese has praised the 22-year-old's professionalism, and is backing him to overcome his former distractions and fulfill his initial promise at United.

"Of course, I want Memphis to be part of my squad,” Mourinho told reporters.“I don’t want to go into last season too much, but I know the player I’ve watched at PSV and the World Cup two years ago when he was a very young kid.

“Having that player in mind, I want to keep him. And I believe in him, yes.Especially as I see a good boy, a good kid, a good professional. I don’t care what people think.

"You can see him driving a nice car and you think this guy is not thinking about football, but that is not the case.“He is frustrated with what happened last season, where he lost all confidence. But he will be back.”

Memphis is expected to play some part when United open their Premier League title challenge at AFC Bournemouth on Sunday.

Pulis 'hoping and praying' Berahino stays at West Brom

Tony Pulis is "hoping and praying" Saido Berahino will stay with West Brom amid persistent speculation the forward's future lies away from the Hawthorns.

Berahino played 86 minutes as West Brom began their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace – Salomon Rondon scoring decisively with 16 minutes remaining.

The 23-year-old forward and Pulis have not always seen eye to eye and, following links to Tottenham during the previous two transfer windows, Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has confirmed his club's interest in Berahino

But veteran head coach Pulis is pleased with Berahino's application at the present time and hopes he has a long-term future with West Brom."He won't leave unless we bring someone in, that has always been the case," he told BBC Sport.

"There has to be someone of that quality coming through the door."It is more important that we stay in the Premier League and Saido's goals will help us do that. We're hoping and praying we can keep him."

Pulis believed his team were good value for their win at Selhurst Park
"I think we deserved it," he added. "Palace never created a lot, they had just long range shots really. I'm very pleased."

Burnley boss Dyche irked by refereeing decisions in Swansea defeat

Burnley boss Sean Dyche bemoaned refereeing decisions after his side slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Swansea City on their Premier League return on Saturday.

A second-half tap-in from Leroy Fer proved to be the difference at Turf Moor but Dyche believes Burnley should have been awarded an “obvious” penalty beforehand.

The Clarets boss claims Michael Keane was impeded by Leroy Fer as he came close to heading his team in front and was baffled referee Jonathan Moss did not point to the spot."I'm a little bit aggrieved that we didn't get Michael Keane's one," Dyche told reporters.

"I think it was a really obvious one, particularly for the linesman. We didn't get much going for us last time on decisions and there was a big one today."Keane's got a header on the back stick from two yards and he can't quite make it because the lad has quite obviously got hold of his shirt.

"We saw it, I don't know how the linesman can't see it, but it didn't get given."
Dyche also fumed at what he believes was a dive from Swansea winger Modou Barrow which went unpunished by Moss.

He added: "I try to get my lads not to fall on the floor. I think there were a number of them that were interesting. We try and do things properly but it's harsh when you don't get those decisions."You're dammed if you do, dammed if you don't. We try and play fair, we don't want to be falling on the floor and then you don't get anything. I'm not enjoying that side of it.

"I've spoken to the powers-that-be and said, 'Are you going to bring in retrospective banning for cheating?' I don't think that will change it but I would like to see it change. I don't want to see that and I don't want my kid growing up seeing that.''
