Atletico Nacional win FIFA Fair Play award for Chapecoense gesture

Atletico Nacional have been awarded the 2016 FIFA Fair Play award for their response to the Colombian air tragedy that struck Chapecoense.

Chapecoense were travelling to Medellin to face Atletico in the Copa Sudamericana final in November when the plane carrying members of their squad, backroom staff, technical commission and a number of journalists crashed, killing 71 people.

The Colombian club held a vigil inside their Estadio Atanasio Girardot at the time the first leg was due to be played, chanting the name of their intended opponents.
Atletico asked CONMEBOL to award the title to Chapecoense in tribute to those who lost their lives, a request which was granted.

Having already won the Copa Libertadores in 2016, Atletico will face the Brazilian side later this year in the Recopa Sudamericana.

The Medellin-based side led by example as clubs from across the globe offered support to Chapecoense as they look to rebuild.Jackson Follmann, Alan Ruschel and Neto were the only players to survive the crash.

:shocked:Mourinho and Wenger receive ZERO votes for FIFA Best Coach of the Year

    16l23v43dzcj2194n2qwaixbbg.jpg

Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger did not receive a single vote for World Coach of the Year.

Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri won the award after a phenomenal 2015-16 season with the Foxes that saw them unbelievably lift the Premier League title.
But none of the world's national team captains, managers or media picked Manchester United boss Mourinho or Arsenal manager Wenger, despite having three votes in total.

Ranieri, meanwhile, received 22.6 per cent of the total votes, with Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane in second with 16.56% and Fernando Santos taking third with 16.24% after winning Euro 2016 with Portugal.

Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund supporters awarded FIFA fan award

    hd-jurgen-klopp-liverpool_9izgs7vdktmd1sj6c92u8s58r.jpg

Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund supporters have been awarded Fifa's fan award following their meeting before last season's Europa League quarter-final at a sell-out Anfield.

The Reds staged one of the most dramatic comebacks Anfield has ever seen to overcome Thomas Tuchel's side in a classic European tie.

Having drawn 1-1 in Germany, Jurgen Klopp welcomed his former side to Merseyside for the following leg, which ended in a dramatic 4-3 win for the hosts, with Dejan Lovren netting in injury time.

The result kept Liverpool's title hopes alive, as they went on to down Villarreal in the semi-finals.

Sevilla had other ideas, however, and the Europa League specialists came back from behind for their third straight crown to rob Klopp the chance of a trophy in his debut season at Anfield.

Heerenveen seal loan deal for Real Madrid wonderkid Odegaard

    martin-odegaard-real-madrid-2016_79uihdnywf5d13xjjevqzm1p7.jpg

Heerenveen have confirmed that they have signed Real Madrid youngster Martin Odegaard on loan until the end of the season. The 18-year-old will be unveiled by the Eredivisie side on Tuesday morning, having moved to the Dutch club in order to get more regular first team experience.

In May 2015, Odegaard became the youngest ever player to play for Real Madrid, aged just 16-years and 157-days-old.

Despite that early breakthrough, he has failed to hold down a regular spot in Zinedine Zidane's squad, and has found himself playing for the club's second-string Castilla side.Odegaard's prodigious talent has seen him compared to some of the biggest names in world football, including Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

However, former Norway international Jan Aage Fjortoft felt that it was wrong to put too much pressure on the teenager, and that he should be allowed time to develop.

"Comparing Odegaard to Messi is nonsense from the media. Messi is a player who can make the difference and Martin can do the same, but any comparisons should not be taken seriously," Fjortoft told Goal .

"He should be able to develop gradually and one step at a time. He has already shown that he is ready to take on new challenges.

"Martin does not feel any extra pressure. Let's compare his situation to that of established stars like Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm and Toni Kroos. They were all cheered by the media at some stage and they are role models now.

"The footballer of the future does not only need talent, but he should also work hard, be disciplined and put in more effort than others. You have to follow your goals and stay professional."

Heerenveen are currently fourth in the Eredivisie table at the mid-season break, sitting 13 points behind leaders Feyenoord as they chase European qualification.

'He's our player!' - Klopp issues hands off warning to Barcelona amid Coutinho interest

    hd-jurgen-klopp-philippe-coutinho_11y6ta8ysgo7j1davo2fbi98k3.jpg

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp dismissed Barcelona's reported interest in Philippe Coutinho, insisting he still has no plans to sell the star midfielder.

The Brazil international is set to make his return from an ankle injury when his side face Southampton in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Coutinho's stellar form has seen him linked with a potential £60 million move to Barca, but Klopp said the 24-year-old would remain at Anfield."We never had any ideas or plans or any talks about him leaving, because he is our player," he told UK newspapers."There are no other ideas, nothing has changed."

Coutinho was enjoying an excellent campaign before his injury, contributing five goals and as many assists in 13 Premier League games.Klopp said there was no chance of a club like Barca cooling their interest in Coutinho just because of a slight injury setback.

"It would be nice if big clubs thought like this and forgot about a player completely because he's been injured for five or six weeks," he said."Big clubs don't think this way, unfortunately. It was not a big injury so there was no question of him not being the same player afterwards."

After facing Southampton, Liverpool head to Old Trafford for a league clash against Manchester United on Sunday.
