Tottenham 4-3 Wycombe Wanderers: Son strikes at the death in incredible comeback

    sonheungmin-cropped_43lzfb239cz013u3msgcwmqeo.jpg

Dele Alli and Son Heung-min broke Wycombe Wanderers' hearts as Tottenham mounted a remarkable late comeback to prevail 4-3 in an FA Cup classic at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

Wycombe gained fame with their run to the semi-finals in 2000-01, but nothing from that campaign - even Roy Essandoh's winner at Leicester City - could match the drama that unfolded in this fourth-round tie.

Twice it appeared Gareth Ainsworth's League Two side would stun their illustrious opponents as they led 2-0 at the break thanks to Paul Hayes' brace and then 3-2 with six minutes of normal time remaining when substitute Garry Thompson headed home superbly.

Son's deflected drive and Vincent Janssen's penalty cancelled out Hayes' double midway through the second period, before Thompson's goal had the visiting fans in dreamland once again.

But Alli, who, along with Janssen and Mousa Dembele, was introduced off the bench by Mauricio Pochettino after nine changes to the original starting XI from Spurs' previous game, levelled matters once again in the 89th minute with a coolly taken finish.

With Ainsworth's side hanging on for a replay, six minutes of stoppage time were signalled and as the clock ticked over into a seventh, Son got free in the box and side-footed past goalkeeper Jamal Blackman with covering defender Joe Jacobson only able to slice an attempted clearance into the roof of the net.

It was a devastating finale for Wycombe, who came into the game on the back of a 16-match unbeaten run, and their confidence was evident as they went close to going ahead inside the first minute.Sido Jombati's deep, looping cross from the right was headed back across goal by Adebayo Akinfenwa, but an unmarked Hayes could only nod against the crossbar from three yards.

Wycombe's first nervy moment arrived in the 19th minute, a mix-up between Jacobson and Blackman presenting Son with the ball but the South Korean fired wide with only Jacobson covering.

And that miss proved costly as Josh Onomah half-cleared a corner from the right and the ball dropped to Hayes, who thumped home a first-time left-footed volley.Hayes intervened at the other end shortly afterwards, clearing Moussa Sissoko's effort from in front of his goal-line before Blackman's fine stop denied Son's low drive.

Remarkably, Wycombe doubled their lead nine minutes before half-time. Sam Wood, played in by a smart Akinfenwa pass, raced away down the right and was brought down by Cameron Carter-Vickers, with Hayes sending his penalty down the middle.

Son continued to look a threat and he reduced the arrears on the hour when the South Korean forward's driven cross deflected off Jacobson and beat Blackman at his near post.

And Spurs were back on level terms shortly afterwards as Aaron Pierre blocked off Janssen on the right-hand side of the box, the replacement just squeezing his penalty past Blackman low to the keeper's left.

Kieran Trippier's rib injury meant Spurs had to play the last 15 minutes a man light and Wycombe capitalised on the extra space down Tottenham's right as Myles Weston surged clear and crossed for Thompson to head home. But the drama was far from over, Alli keeping his composure to slot beyond Blackman.

And there was worse to come for Wycombe, as good Spurs interplay released Son and the desperate Jacobson could not prevent the winner, giving Tottenham the final say in an enthralling encounter.

:baffled:Goalkeeper sent off for peeing during game

    urinals_lk0erup1qo9e10tq4czwwmlnt.jpg

Scottish junior goalkeeper Gary Whyte got more than he bargained for when he answered the call of nature during Shettleston's clash with Shotts Bon Accord.Ross Dickson had given Shotts the lead after 25 minutes before Shettleston were reduced to 10 men in the second-half.

The red card came in the most unlikely of circumstances, with less than 20 minutes remaining, Whyte went behind one of the goals to urinate - but when he returned to the pitch, was given his marching orders.

The duo play in the West of Scotland Super League First Division, the second-highest level of junior football in the western region of Scotland.
Shettleston have produced a number of notable players including Scottish international Campbell Forsyth as well as former Manchester United manager Tommy Docherty.

Southampton 0-5 Arsenal: Walcott grabs hat-trick as Gunners cruise

    danny-welbeck-arsenal-fa-cup-28012017_1mevu27erjfko1rafavrr8labz.jpg

Danny Welbeck netted a brilliant brace on his first Arsenal start since May before Theo Walcott's hat-trick offered further cheer for suspended manager Arsene Wenger, who watched a rampant 5-0 thrashing of Southampton from the St Mary's stands.

Claude Puel's Saints were excellent in overcoming Liverpool to reach the EFL Cup final in midweek but a much-changed XI did not find the fourth round of the FA Cup to be such forgiving terrain.

A youthful line-up found England international Welbeck, whose past two seasons have been decimated by serious knee injuries, eager to make up for lost time as he finished twice with aplomb before the first-half reached its midway point.

Walcott then took centre stage, having missed the past six matches with a calf problem, and ensured Wenger's behaviour could be far more measured than the touchline fury from last weekend's win over Burnley that landed him with a four-game ban from the dugout.

The man who would depart with the matchball found space down the right against his former club in the third minute and the England winger's cutback reached Jeff Reine-Adelaide, whose shot was deflected behind. It was an enterprising start by Arsenal, as Lucas Perez fizzed a ball across the face of goal and just beyond a vocally disappointed Welbeck.

Lucas seemingly took whatever advice was dispensed on board, clipping a pass through the Southampton backline for his forward partner to lift a cute finish over teenage goalkeeper Harry Lewis with the outside of his right boot Having had little trouble relocating his match sharpness, Welbeck looked to make hay and it was 2-0 when he immaculately controlled Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's lofted pass and slotted left-footed through Lewis' legs.

An ill-advised venture outside of his area from David Ospina concluded with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg crashing a volley over and midweek hero Shane Long forced the Arsenal keeper into a sharp save.

Hojbjerg also sent a free-kick into the side-netting but had an unwitting role in Arsenal's third as Jack Stephens unceremoniously thumped a clearance into his face.

Welbeck retrieved the ball and exchanged passes with Lucas before lacklustre defending from Sam McQueen made Walcott's finish more routine than it might have been.Lewis held a shot from rampaging full-back Hector Bellerin as Arsenal's pressure and total dominance began after the interval.

Southampton's weary defence would not have been heartened by the sight of Alexis Sanchez ready to replace Welbeck in the 65th minute. Four minutes later the Chile superstar hit the byline and pulled the ball back for Walcott to sidefoot his second.

There was more sublime hold-up play from Sanchez to tee up the England winger for his third and a fine stop from Lewis denied Lucas the goal his endeavours deserved.

It all meant there was no need for the late drama Arsenal provided in recent encounters against West Brom, Bournemouth, Preston North End and Burnley, with assistant manager Steve Bould able to enjoy a relaxed conclusion from the bench. How Wenger must have envied him.

Inter 3-0 Pescara: Hosts up to fourth with seventh straight win

    danilo-dambrosio-joao-mario-inter-pescara-serie-a_x9jowo1zwiss17b0r5jf6gmll.jpg

Inter's charge up the Serie A table continued on Saturday as they beat struggling Pescara 3-0 in their seventh successive league win to move up to fourth.

Stefano Pioli has overseen a remarkable upturn in form since replacing Frank de Boer in November and they were ruthless at San Siro against Pescara, continuing their impressive winning streak to capitalise on Lazio's defeat at home to Chievo and move up one place in the standings.

Pescara's form coming into the contest was in stark contrast to Inter's, having lost 10 in 12 in Serie A, and the only surprising aspect of the hosts' opening goal was that it took 23 minutes to arrive.

Danilo D'Ambrosio was the one to break Pescara's resolve and Joao Mario added a second just before the break to effectively put the game beyond the relegation favourites.Inter were significantly less dominant after the interval, as they sat back and appeared content to let Pescara have the ball.

But they did eventually finish things off, as second-half substitute Eder converted shortly after his introduction, wrapping up a routine triumph to strengthen their challenge for a Champions League spot.

Rock-bottom Pescara were unsurprisingly subjected to relentless pressure right from the start in Milan and, although the home side took a little while to click in the final third, the visitors struggled to contain them.

Inter's dominance eventually paid off in the 23rd minute, as D'Ambrosio made the most of slack marking to steer Marcelo Brozovic's pinpoint left-wing cross in at the back post.

That goal gave Inter further encouragement and Ivan Perisic nearly added another just after the half-hour mark, seeing his curling left-footed effort go just wide from 25 yards.

Pescara were their own worst enemies on numerous occasions and they almost gifted Inter a second goal a few moments later, when Joao Mario intercepted debutant Grigoris Kastanos' woeful pass across the edge of the box before shooting straight at Albano Bizzarri.

But the Portugal international made amends just before the break, latching on to Perisic's teasing delivery to give Inter a two-goal cushion.Inter appeared to ease off a little at the start of the second half, allowing Pescara to see more of the ball and as a result they almost pulled one back in the 59th minute.

Jean-Christophe Bahebeck burst into the left side of the Inter box and saw his shot blocked by Samir Handanovic, before Valerio Verre smashed the rebound just over.

That let-off seemed to jolt Inter back into life and a few moments later Perisic again went close from 25 yards, as the home side looked to finish Pescara off.

And eventually the result was put beyond all doubt 17 minutes from time – Mauro Icardi squaring across the face of goal despite appearing to be offside and teeing Eder up for an easy finish.

Ramos: Madrid can win La Liga if fans get behind us

    sergio-ramos-cropped_1d63tswztmlc8150d2saf6qz7a.jpg

Sergio Ramos wants the Santiago Bernabeu to unite behind Real Madrid as the La Liga leaders look to relocate top form against Real Sociedad on Sunday.
Zidane launches stout defence of under-fire Benzema

The Madrid faithful have voiced increasing discontent over recent weeks, with four-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo among those to feel their wrath, during a run of one win in five across all competitions.

With their Spanish record 40-match unbeaten run at an end, the slump hit a low point when Wednesday's 2-2 draw at Celta Vigo meant Copa del Rey elimination at the quarter-final stage.

Zinedine Zidane's men are one and two points ahead of Sevilla and Barcelona respectively at the top of the league table, meaning they are likely to have ceded the summit by the time their kick-off in this weekend's concluding match.

"Above all, we want the fans to support us in order to help make us a better team and I'm convinced that together we can win La Liga," Ramos told Marca, having made a similar plea after scoring both goals in last Saturday's laboured 2-1 win over Malaga.

"It is going to be a tough game against a very difficult opponent who have played very good football this season and are deservedly near the top of the table."Lucas Vazquez netted in vain at Celta in midweek and the 25-year-old winger shared his captain's sentiments.

"Playing in front of our own fans always gives us an extra gear because every time they applaud and encourage us it drives us on even more," Lucas said."With all of us together, pushing in the same direction, then I'm convinced that we can achieve great things."

Real Betis 1-1 Barcelona: Controversy as champions lose further ground in title race

    suarez-betis-barcelona_f1k1akfwizx1ebvdntv6i90q.jpg

Barcelona missed the chance to temporarily overtake Real Madrid in the La Liga table, slumping to a 1-1 draw at Real Betis on Sunday.

The champions pulled within a point of their arch-rivals and the league leaders, who host Real Sociedad later in the day and still have a game in hand to extend their lead.Betis took charge of the clash early at Estadio Benito Villamarin and hit the woodwork twice through Dani Ceballos and then Ruben Castro.

Alex Alegria struck 15 minutes from time to give the hosts a deserved advantage but Luis Suarez salvaged a draw in the closing stages, after the champions had seen a clear goal not given earlier on.

Complaints from Camp Nou figures over officiating have dominated headlines in recent weeks and the acrimony is likely to continue after the officials failed to spot that Jordi Alba had turned the ball over the line just moments after Betis' opener.

The incident compounded Barca's fortunes, though, with Luis Enrique's side short on ideas and second-best for long spells of the match, in which Betis twice hit the woodwork before eventually finding the net.

That was until the 90th minute, however, when Suarez raced onto Lionel Messi's pass and slotted home to snatch a point. The visitors will certainly feel justice was done, despite their largely lacklustre display, but leaders Real Madrid could be four points clear with a game in hand if they beat Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu later on Sunday.

Barca wasted little time in taking the game to their hosts, Suarez seeing a half-volley deflect narrowly wide following Aleix Vidal's deep cross.

Ruben Castro saw a chance go begging when he scuffed the ball straight at the restored Marc-Andre ter Stegen after Lucas Digne had been pressured into conceding possession, but the Germany goalkeeper had to be a little more acrobatic to claw Dani Ceballos' shot away from the top corner.

Barca's play was becoming increasingly disjointed and it was Betis that continued to look the more likely to break the deadlock, but Antonio Adan produced a fine one-handed save to deny Neymar following Lionel Messi's superb throughball shortly before half-time.

The visitors looked a little sharper after the restart, Vidal volleying just past the left-hand post after meeting Messi's cross from the left unmarked.

Betis recovered and continued to frustrate Barca in their approach play, with MSN kept firmly on the fringes of play, and Ceballos was inches from giving them the advantage on the scoreboard with a dipping drive that cannoned off the top of the crossbar.

Luis Enrique introduced Jordi Alba, Sergi Roberto and Gomes from the bench in a bid to inject some intensity into the champions' play but they were again saved by the woodwork when Castro cut in from the left and saw a shot deflect off Gerard Pique and onto the post.

But Betis were not to be denied from the resulting corner. Ter Stegen failed to reach the in-swinging delivery and Alegria turned the ball over the line from Ryan Donk's knockdown despite Pique's best efforts.

Barca were then denied an equaliser by a dreadful decision from the officials.Alba met Vidal's low cross at the far post and steered the ball clearly over the line before Aissa Mandi hooked it away, but referee Jose Hernandez Hernandez failed to award the goal.

Another Vidal centre from the right deflected towards the near post but was just cleared in time by Mandi again, but Castro shot straight at Ter Stegen when he should have made the points safe after being sent through one-on-one.

That missed ultimately proved costly as, in the 90th minute, Messi picked up a loose ball 20 yards out and slid it through to Suarez , who fired low past Adan first time to rescue a point.

Chelsea flop Pato set for €18m China transfer on bumper salary

    alexandre-pato-musa-cagiran-villarreal-osmanlispor-europa-league_be7oa0pqr8mw1c2zwbrcfzfv2.jpg

Former Chelsea flop Alexandre Pato looks set to end his frustrating stay at Villarreal for a bumper transfer to Chinese Super League club Tianjin Quanjin.

Pato appears ready to play on his third different continent in as many seasons, with his first stint in La Liga with The Yellow Submarine proving to be unfruitful.

The 27-year-old is the subject of a reported €18 million bid from Tianjin, with manager Fabio Cannavaro eager to add him to his squad that already consists of new arrival Axel Witsel.

It is rumoured the former Brazil international will put pen to paper on a three-year deal that will see him earn €6m a season. The aspiring Chinese powerhouses sensed their opportunity to snap up a player who flattered to deceive at Villarreal, only managing a return of six goals in 24 outings.

Pato had moved to El Madrigal last summer following an inconsequential loan spell at Chelsea - where he made just two appearances - from Corinthians.

He has been in Rome in recent days completing his medical, and will join up with his new team-mates as they embark on their pre-season in Italy.

Villarreal coach Fran Escriba had confirmed an "interesting offer" had arrived for Pato, leaving the ex-AC Milan star out of his squad that beat Granada 2-0 on Saturday.

Tianjin's pursuit of Fiorentina hitman Nikola Kalinic fell through earlier in January after he turned down the transfer, forcing Cannavaro to look elsewhere.

Udinese 2-1 AC Milan: Hosts come back to claim victory

    udinese-milan-thereau_s06eu1gsk3gg1jdrd1ehbu1jv.jpg

Udinese inflicted AC Milan's third successive defeat across all competitions after Rodrigo De Paul's second-half strike secured a 2-1 Serie A triumph on Sunday.

Luigi Del Neri's men came into the match in poor shape themselves having lost each of their last three league games, but Milan were unable to capitalise on their second-half superiority, as Udinese joined Napoli and Juventus in beating Vincenzo Montella's charges in just over a week.

Milan looked like a side eager to bounce back from those disappointing results during the early exchanges and their focused start culminated in Giacomo Bonaventura breaking the deadlock early in the first half. The Italian was soon replaced by Serie A debutant Gerard Deulofeu due to injury and shortly after that Udinese restored parity through Cyril Thereau.

Deulofeu was one of Milan's chief threats in the second half, with his trickery and charging runs causing Udinese plenty of issues, but his final pass was often lacking.

And Udinese took full advantage of Milan's wastefulness, with De Paul's 25-yard strike finding the net and adding to the Rossoneri's woes.Milan, who stay seventh but seven points behind third-place Napoli, showed no signs of their recent struggles early doors and were in front after eight minutes.

Suso, Milan's star man this season, was unsurprisingly crucial as he picked Bonaventura out with a pinpoint cross and the Italy international smashed home from close range.

Udinese responded well, gradually wresting control of the midfield, and they should have levelled in the 24th minute, but Davide Faraoni did not attack Jakub Jankto's cross with enough conviction at the back post and he agonisingly missed the target while colliding with the goal.

Faraoni was forced off due to that collision, while Bonaventura also had his match ended early by injury, with Deulofeu taking his place. The changes did little to upset Udinese's rhythm, however, and they deservedly drew level just after the half-hour mark.

Emil Hallfredsson fed Thereau into the left side of the area at the end of a swift counter and the Frenchman applied an emphatic finish past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Milan looked brighter early in the second half, coinciding with Deulofeu starting to make a nuisance of himself.

The on-loan Everton man cut in from the left and brilliantly found Suso in the far side of the area, but his eventual effort was deflected wide.

Deulofeu then picked out a clever reverse pass to Carlos Bacca after another darting run, with the Colombian's 20-yard effort fumbled by Orestis Karnezis.Milan's inability to capitalise on their pressure ultimately contributed to their downfall.

Udinese hit Milan on the break with 17 minutes to go and De Paul beat Donnarumma from 25 yards with a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner, despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the Argentinian's effort.

Milan almost drew level three minutes from time as substitute Gianluca Lapadula hit the post from a tight angle, but Udinese managed to see it out and hold on to the victory.

Sassuolo 0-2 Juventus: Higuain and Khedira fire champions to win

    juventus-celebrating-vs-sassuolo_nlz3do6mppne1bz38rr7kmorn.jpg

League leaders and reigning champions Juventus strengthened their grip on Serie A with a routine 2-0 win at Sassuolo, as title challengers Roma suffered a costly defeat at Sampdoria.

Well-taken goals from Gonzalo Higuain - his eighth in his last six league games - and Sami Khedira had the favourites in control inside the first 25 minutes at Mapei Stadium, where Eusebio Di Francesco's outclassed hosts proved ill-equipped to respond.

Juve surprisingly dropped points in a 2-1 loss at Fiorentina earlier this month, but they appear now to be firmly back on track, having claimed victory with relative ease in Modena, to follow wins over Lazio in the league and AC Milan in the Coppa Italia.

Second-placed Roma meanwhile lost 3-2 at the Luigi Ferraris on Sunday to find themselves four points back from the frontrunners and at risk of being caught by Napoli.

Next weekend Juve have an opportunity to gain revenge for their 2-1 defeat at Inter in September, when the Nerazzurri make the trip to Piedmont for the second Derby d'Italia of the season. Sassuolo remain comfortably clear of the relegation zone, with a trip to immediate rivals Genoa awaiting on Sunday.

Juve shrugged off a somewhat shaky start to take the lead after nine minutes, as coach Massimiliano Allegri's attacking line-up paid dividends.

Mario Mandzukic sent Alex Sandro racing away down the left wing with a tasty back heel to complete a one-two with the full-back and Higuain did what he does best from the Brazilian's subsequent cross, getting ahead of his marker to stab home from close range in the centre of the penalty area.

Taking the lead served to settle the champions and they doubled their advantage in style in the 25th minute. Higuain closed down veteran Paolo Cannavaro and won possession in a dangerous area before cutting a pass back into the box. Paulo Dybala then fooled the Sassuolo defence with a wonderful dummy and Khedira arrived to smash the ball into the top corner of the net.

Dybala nearly made it 3-0 when he struck the post with a shot from outside the area in the 53rd minute, before Sassuolo finally tested the visitors' goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

The 39-year-old produced a smart double save to deny first Matteo Politano and then his former Juve team-mate Alessandro Matri in a rare foray forward from the beleaguered home team.

That was as close as Sassuolo came to pulling a goal back and, while Juve could not find a third to put the result beyond doubt, they saw out the time remaining in comfort to earn a useful buffer at the top of the standings.

Nice 3-1 Guingamp: Balotelli on target to send his side top of Ligue 1

Mario Balotelli's ninth league goal of the season helped Nice beat Guingamp 3-1 at the Allianz Riviera as they returned to the summit of the Ligue 1 table.

Lucien Favre's men had dropped to second place following four draws in their past five games, but they went one point clear of Monaco again ahead of Sunday evening's encounter between the Stade Louis II side and Paris Saint-Germain.Alassane Plea ensured his side got off to a fine start when he opened the scoring in the 11th minute after being set up by Valentin Eysseric.

Nice continued to dominate proceedings in the first half and Jean-Michel Seri doubled his side's lead seven minutes before the break with a right-footed shot from inside the area.

Jimmy Briand pulled one back for Guingamp at the hour-mark following some good work from Nill de Pauw, but there would not be a comeback as Balotelli restored his side's two-goal lead in the closing stages of the game.

:love:Rooney receives golden boot from Sir Bobby Charlton after breaking Man Utd record

    wayne-rooney-fa-cup-manchester-united-v-wigan_1vzbr0cczw3na1vmn0i3z6ctnw.jpg

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has been presented with a special award from Sir Bobby Charlton after becoming the club’s all-time greatest goalscorer.

The 31-year-old broke the record, which was previously held by Charlton, against Stoke City, notching his 250th goal for the Red Devils with a last minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw at the Britannia Stadium.

And, ahead of United’s FA Cup fourth-round clash with Wigan, Rooney was given a special trophy by the former record-holder in recognition of his achievement.

The skipper was handed the award just before kick-off to huge applause from the Old Trafford crowd before captaining the side in a rare start.

Despite his record-breaking heroics, Rooney has endured a difficult season for Jose Mourinho’s side and his future at the club is the subject of much speculation. His goal against Stoke was only the second time he has netted in the Premier League all season and has he managed only five goals in total this campaign.
